G510s Touch - Hard disk failed before I could make a recovery disc

I purchased a Lenovo G510s Touch for my parents who live in Iceland. When they had used it for 1 day the hard disk died and can not be recovered according to Lenovo resellers in Iceland.

I purchased a brand new SSD instead and want to set Windows 8.1 up again on the completely new SSD.

There is no official way for me to contact Lenovo for support on this even though the laptop has International warranty because that doesn't apply to Iceland, so there is no easy way to return the whole laptop so I'm going with replacing the HD and installing everything again myself, so the forums is my only hope. What does someone do in this sittuation where the hard disk failes on day one and the original disk is completely useless and needs to be replaced by a brand new one and no recovery disc exists?

Hope someone can assist, I have no trouble setting up a DVD or USB with the install and setting up all the necessary drivers and such, I just don't know where to look for the source material.

Re: G510s Touch - Hard disk failed before I could make a recovery disc

hi orvarh,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

As I understand your main concern as of now is to get a Windows OS into the system.

The concern is the Product key inside the Motherboard.

You can borrow a retail Windows 8.1 Installer but it will not push Since it will not work with the Product key in the BIOS (You will need to have you own product key which will only come if you purchase one from Windows)

Here the options I have in mind:

The recovery CD/DVD can be ordered from Lenovo Technical Support. This will auto Activate the Product key you have in the BOS.

Purchase a Retail Version of WIndows 8.1 with Product key from Microsoft

Re: G510s Touch - Hard disk failed before I could make a recovery disc

It seems like I am back to square one :-(

Lenovo sent 4 Recovery discs in the mail and I started installing them, but when It asked for "OS Core Disk 1" and I put that in, I got this error message:

An unexpected error happened:
System.IO.IOexception: The drive cannot find the sector requested.

  at System.IO.__Error.WinIOError(Int32 errorCode, String maybeFullPath)
  at System.IO.FileStream.ReadCore(Byte[] buffer, Int32 offset, Int32 count)
  at System.IO.FileStream.Read(Byte[] array, Int32 offset, Int32 count)
  at System.IO.StreamReader.ReadBuffer()
  at System.IO.StreamReader.ReadLine()
  at USBRecovery.FunctionClass.ReadRecoveryINI(Int32& currentNO, Int32& totalINO, Int32& disctype, Int32 recoverytype)

Now there seems to be no way to keep running the install and I am completely stuck.

Anyone out there know what this could be?
