Re: G530-4446-xxU takes FOREVER to POST after BIOS update + Brightness Issue Persists

2010-03-01, 2:51 AM

The issue I've run into, with the wireless, is that it's off - and using the hard switch on the front doesn't do anything.

The hardware is enabled (i.e. in the device manager), the OS has the wireless enabled (after I installed the wireless driver) but the unit does not permit wireless connectivity.  The Fn+F5 issue is one that others have brought up - but your last post did not specifically reference that Cleo was working on it.

Can you please mention this to him, and see if he can review this functionality as a part of his BIOS review, too?

Thank you.

D.

Darryl, unless I miss my guess, Cleo is a woman's name.

I know she reads this forum - it's where the issue started, and you can see her posts recently.

I believe she's contacting from Malaysia, and her locution is pretty Chinese. I think straightforward communication is best, and that is the way she writes.

If you feel the need, you can private message her from the forum here.  Do remember the large difference in timezones, and often the actual day, due to International Date Line position.

Now, your problem is interesting. I don't remember any Wireless control on the BIOS, but for many of us, the Wireless itself certainly turns on with bootup and works fine.

If it doesn't, the reasons can be pretty involved, as there is Power Management to consider, and that has its own drivers, as well as the capability in the Wireless driver.

Here's a suggestion. Open up your Device Manager view of the Wireless driver as you have. Is there a Power Management tab on it (mine is on the far right of the Wireless device panel)? If so, you will probably find a checkbox for 'allow the computer to turn off this device to save power'.

I would uncheck this box, reboot, and see if your wireless is then on.

One other place to look might be the power scheme, which you can access battery icon Power Options. I however didn't see an option to turn off the wireless card on mine - just to reduce its power.

It's always a possibility your card is bad, etc.. also.

Best fortune, and do remember, Darryl, that we're all just customers here, with the exception of those who have special Lenovo-identity symbols and bold-print names.

Perhaps you misunderstand me.

I am not indicating that there are options within the BIOS that can be set, to control the wireless networking functionality.  I am saying that the BIOS upgrade to the latest (1.17, was it?) has caused the 4446-23U machine belonging to my friend to have NO WIRELESS NETWORKING functionality at all.

I will try to contact Cleo directly, however, that has proven fruitless for many here, including one, "Dr. Chet" whom you have been publicly collaborating with - he was thrilled that apparently you had managed to get Cleo's attention, when the rest of us had had little success in gaining Lenovo's corporate notice.

Should I presume, by your comments, that you are then NOT on staff with Lenovo?

Hi Darryl,

- yes, once again, I have no affiliation with Lenovo whatsoever, aside from purchasing a machine. I wondered why you would think I did, but probably that's because of the sign-in name. I use such names for convenience, as do others.

- I did understand you that the wireless didn't come up on a machine after a BIOS update. Did you try the idea I described, to disable the power-down ability on the driver? The thinking is that this may give a work-around for the time being, if it removes a path by which wireless shutdown occurs.

- I think somehow there's a misunderstanding as far as others speaking with Cleo, as I know they have, ever since she joined the conversation. She's come back with some quite concrete progress so far, as I've let the board know.

- I am in Cleo's communication very late yesterday Pacific time, that they continue working on the BIOS problems. In fact, as I understand her role and these problems we face, it is mainly communication, and that is what she is trying to get properly done in a large company, on our behalf.

Regards

Hi Narrlenovo, thanks for your clarification for me. I really appreciate that. :)

Hi darrylhadfiled, Welcome to Lenovo Community! I am sorry if you're feeling not getting attention from us. In fact, this forum is established for driving communication and discussion among peers. Also, i would get myself involved from time to time, however, i could not attend to all the threads in this forum due to having other role and assignments. I will try my best to answer as many cases as i can. At the meantime, Mods and Gurus can be a great helper, too. :)

Now i hear you, yes i hear you, and i would like to suggest you to try installing Access Connection to check if can get the Wifi Fn+F5 key to work.

Thanks.

Regards,

Cleo

I tried using the access connections vistaa version, and I also tried using the Windows 7 Version. Neither version got the Fn+f5 button working. Also i tried the Lenovo System Toolbox, and that button doesnt work either(the little toolbox next to the power button).

Whoops, missed that memo. I forgot to say that mine is a 4446-24U

FullMetal, here's a thought I posted earlier to Darryl, with a method to try for this problem - relevant parts copied from an earlier message.

My wireless works fine. Its the Fn buttons that dont work. I can use the physical switch on the front to turn the wi-fi on and off. The fn+f5 button is supposed to bring up the TVT access connections window. However, since upgrading to windows 7, I've started having problems with the Fn+F5, the brightness controls, and the little toolbox button.

How ironic.. the friend of mine who owns the 4446-23u that I've come here looking for a resolution for... has had her hard drive crash, now.

I will not again recommend Lenovo hardware to anyone without prefacing all of the issues I've seen them go through - and the lack of timely response from Lenovo in addressing said issues.
