Welcome to the forum!

While there are a few Lenovo employees in here helping out on a volunteer basis, this is not an official support channel with dedicated Lenovo support personnel assigned to it. Instead, this is designed to be a user-to-user support and discussion forum. You may or may not get an answer directly from one of the Lenovo employees as there are way more of us than them and all of them, even Mark, have full-time jobs doing other things.

If you got a PM, then you would send your e-mail address to the Lenovo employee who asked for it (presumably that was Mark or Cleo).  As to why they would ask for the e-mail addresses rather than use the ones you registered with, many people register for sites using a throwaway address that was created for that purpose.

Re: G530-4446-24U takes FOREVER to POST after BIOS update

2010-02-08, 16:36 PM

Cleo,

We've moved several of our clients' G530-4446-36U's to W7-32 Pro and Ult using a clean disk wipe (incl removing partitions) and clean install. We have NOT added any Lenovo updates from either the recommended ibm support site (http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/product.do?brandind=10&familyind=430819&machineind=448953&operatingsystemind=49979&template=%2Fproductselection%2Flandingpages%2FdownloadsDriversLandingPage.vm&validate=true) or the consumer site.

Until there is a definitive set of drivers or BIOS updates for this notebook, the default Microsoft driver instances work perfectly (except for dynamic brightness "after" boot and W7 startup). BIOS is the default 1.09 on all notebooks--which what was on the notebooks we've udpated to W7--so no changes were made there.

Here's info from one G530-4446-36U we have in our shop now (W7 ULT 32)

Video/Chipset driver is     Intel 8.15.10.1972

Broadcom LAN via            Microsoft is 10.100.4.0

Broadcom WLAN              Broadcom 5.30.21.0

Power Manager (not being used) inherent via ACPI MS default 6.1.7600.16385

As I've posted in a number of threads, I'd appreciate "some" guidance as to when there will be at least a BIOS update. Please post this either on one of these message threads or a sticky new posting. You see this has generated months of speculation and frustration in not providing acknowledgment that this is being worked on.

I'd underscore our clients are using these 4446-36U's with 'no' problems--other than brightness--for everyday business applications. They just keep pinging us to see when Lenovo will have a fix. It would be great to share a milestone--no matter how tentaive.

Giving us a beta BIOS via this forum for testing would be great. But we encourage our customers to check-in on the "correct" support site for 4446-36U downloads appropriate to the OS. (not the consumer site). Four months is a long time to keep speculating.

THanks for your help.

Cleo, for your drivers query:

These are all the latest, downloaded from the consumer site where applicable for G530 Windows 7.

Note that Access Connections is not on the machine, and never has been - this was a clean install of Windows 7, not an upgrade install, and I chose not to have the utilities after the experience in Vista. Thus this machine should be 'cleaner' yet, leaving the issue in the BIOW as we understand.

Thanks for your diligence, Cleo, as you are pursuing this.

Regards,

Clive

VGA driver version:Intel Mobile 4 Chipset 8.15.10.1872

Power Manager driver version:seems to be default Microsoft standard from 2006, 6.1.7600.16385 - lots of ACPI drivers

WLAN driver version:Broadcom 802.11g  5.30.21.0

Access Connection version: I don't use Access Connection at all - it is not on the machine. Windows 7 wireless is flawless and instant to acquire networks.

Re: G530-4446-24U takes FOREVER to POST after BIOS update

Very good. I concur with a_gunslinger about which function keys do and don't work, with Bios 1.15 and the 75-second boot delay.

In fact, I did some more experimenting this morning:

  1. the delay acts very much like a device or network timeout of some kind. On cold startup, the DVD drive runs briefly, but it does not _appear_ that the hard drive is accessed.  This is impossible to tell, of course, both because it is nearly silent, and because Lenovo wired the DVD drive and hard drive to the same LED.

  2. I thought I had tried this before, but did it again. I went into the BIOS setup, and disabled _all_ alternatives for boot device, including the DVD drive. Still, there was the 75 second delay. Since this disabling included the network boot device, perhaps that isn't involved. I'm not actually convinced, that the net or not-present devices were really disabled, though they indicated so when I went into the BIOS setup later to re-enable them.

  3. I tried also the F12-one-time select boot device. There was only a brief pause when I selected the hard drive this way as boot device, but then, I had already waited the 75 second black screen period before I could access the BIOS utility, so this is in no way conclusive.
Cleo, I hope these observations may add to clues for the 4446-NNU BIOS issues.
Regards,
Clive
