How much RAM can I install in my G550 laptop ?
Model: g550 (model name: 20023)
Now I've got 3 GB (DDR3 PC3-8500). According to Personal Systems Reference Lenovo Essential Notebooks
2006 to present - withdrawn, 4 GB is maximum capacity for my model but I'm not sure what does it mean.
Doest it mean I can install 4 GB RAM for each slot ? Or 4GB RAM is the maximum amount of memory that my matherboard can deal with ?

It means 2-2gb sticks total. 1 2 gb stick in each slot.
It looks like you already have 1-2gb stick in there, so you would just have to replace the 1-1gb stick with a 2gb stick.

Usually, manufacturers specs call for a certain maximum of memory, but the machines are able to take a lot more.
In all the searches that I did concerning your machine, they all came up with a 4gb total.
You could run Crucial's scanner and that would tell you exactly how much ram your machine will take.
Keep in mind that a 32bit OS will only see about 3.4 gb of ram. To see any more would require a 64bit OS.

Everything I find "officially" says this computer can only have 4GB ram.
However I think that is only because it uses a 32bit operating system and that is all that it can see.
I would like to know if I install a 64bit operating system on it like Linux Mint 64bit can I take the Ram up to 8GB?
Does anyone know this?

From Lenovos' Overview page for G550:
"DDR3, 800/1066MHz support, 2x SODIMM, up to 8 GB Max"
Is all memory visible in the BIOS? (Press F2 key at boot)
And yes, you will need 64 bit OS to use extra 4 GB.

I can confirm that 8GB of 1066mhz DDR3 Ram works in the lenovo G550 laptop. I have wanted to upgrade my Ram for a long time, even though having an SSD makes the need for 8GB irrelevant a bit. Never the less I was able to get some ram very cheap and tried it out. it shows up in the bios as well as in windows. I have included a picture below in my dropbox:
This link won't be up forever but i can defintely confirm that 8gb is supported! Good luck!
