G555 Flickering Screen - solution

2010-05-20, 17:36 PM

I took delivery of a G555 this week, and I noticed that the LCD screen would occasionally flicker. It was as quick as the blink of an eye (literally) and very random.

Yesterday the screen went mostly black but with a flickering on the top 2 inches of the screen that looks like someone was messing with the vertical hold control on an old CRT television. I noticed that I could squeeze and flex the chassis above the ESC key and below the screen, and the image would return.

I assumed this was therefore a machine that was going to be swapped out, but since I fix computers for a living, I opened up the large access panel on the bottom of the unit. There, below the CPU cooler fan was a white plug connected to a cable wrapped in black cloth tape making its way to the hinge. I recognized it as the video signal cable (think VGA cable on a desktop PC), lightly tugged on the cable and the plug just popped right out!

Uh oh. That could be it, I thought, as I securely plugged the cable back into its socket. After reassembling the computer, the display came right up and its been working fine for a day.

I don't know if that cable was just inserted loose at the factory, or if heat from the nearby CPU is causing the cable to pop out due to expansion, so I will keep an eye on it. Hopefully, this is just a one-time-deal.

Hope this helps somebody...

Welcome. So far I have not had issues yet. The G555 must be a new line. (I did not know that when I ordered mine) Very little support/manuals on the website yet. But they do have all the drivers needed. It's a Great laptop. If you decide to install XP just make sure to change the ACHI to compatibility mode in the bios. (unless you just like BSoD's) If you use Ubuntu. Through the rest of the install process (after the reboot, I installed it inside windows) you will get a terrible display, Like it was going left and right really fast. When it was finished installing and rebooted the problem was still there until the ATI proprietary driver was installed. Then it's fine after that. Please Post any further issues since this is a New Line of Great laptops...Pete
