G580 CPU upgrade - no BIOS

So I bought a new CPU for my old G580 laptop. I wanted to upgrade from the B960 it has right now (it's the 20150 model). The new CPU is a i5-3320M as it's listed as a compatible part on both the downloadable PDF and the PartsLookup website (I checked with my serial number as well).

I changed the CPU, installed thermal paste, everything, but to no avail. Won't even enter BIOS. The "on" LED flashes for 10 seconds, then it shuts down. Installed the old CPU again - it boots without problems. New CPU again - no BIOS, nothing. I have updated my BIOS to the latest possible version (version 5ECN96WW (V9.01), as the newer version shows a "Error 255 - TDK Library Initialization Failed".

I just don't know what to do anymore. Could be a faulty CPU, but I doubt it. The only difference is that the old CPU is Sandy Bridge, and the new is Ivy Bridge. But it's shown as "compatible" with the laptop everywhere. It's a shame really...

Re: G580 CPU upgrade - no BIOS

Hi traxosavar  ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

This most likely would work with same Sandy Bridge processor as chipset and BIOS firmware maybe limiting the upgrade. Theoretically should work with backward compatibility , case may differ on each OEM firmwares and built.

What is your current Windows and BIOS version?

Can you post an image of msinfo32 for your current BIOS version.  Error on install may be similar to this discussion as the verson was intended for a Window 8 as users need to rollback to Win8 without 8.1 update.

There were successful cases of upgrade on this post  that you can review for reference :

By stilldsm "Lenovo G580 (20150) with Intel B960 dual core CPU(sandy bridge). Socket rPGA 989 (G1 +G2)
This one has been successfully upgraded to I7 3630QM (Ivy bridge). Latest bios on Lenovo site (9.01). It is a little bit modded, wifi whitelist removed + advanced menu unlocked. "

By Ime  "Lenovo G580 (20150) with I7 3612QM CPU (SR0MQ) .

Previously installed  was B820 " from this post  and siki133 from Celeron 1000M to i7-3612QM

Take time to review links provided so you can decide on the best action plan that you would like to try.

Do take care on any BIOS upgrades and check on the read me files to ensure installation.

Update us what would work best for you.

Regards

Re: G580 CPU upgrade - no BIOS

I would also default the BIOS - remove battery, unplug AC adapter and then hold down the power button for 30sec... then replace the battery and AC adapter and try the Novo button then into BIOS and set defaults and exit and save.
