G710 5GHZ Wifi

2017-02-21, 23:00 PM

Hi there,

I have a 5Ghz router and I can recieve this signal on my phone. I'm trying to get 5GHZ on my Lenovo G710.

I guess the native network adapter does not support 5GHz, is it?

What are my options besides USB wifi dongle?

Laptop G710

Type 80AHCTO

Wifi Driver: 7.35.295.2

thnx in advanced.

Giancarlo

The specs on your laptop show that it only supports 802.11 b/g/n WiFi standards, and not the 802.11a or 802.11ac standard needed for 5GHz.

You can verify what standards the card in your laptop supports by Right Clicking on Start, opening a Command Prompt (Admin) and in the resulting window type:  netsh wlan show drivers and press Enter

The resulting output will have a section called Radio Types Supported, and if the specs online are are correct, it will show:   Radio types supported     : 802.11n 802.11g 802.11b

The easiest fix would be to buy a USB WiFi adapter, since not all adapters will work, since Lenovo has a whitelist that will only allow certain cards.   That said, there is a note in the readme.txt for the BIOS version 8ECN95WW regarding adding support for the Intel 3160-AC WLAN combo (WiFi + Bluetooth) card, but it does not give the FRU (lenovo part number) for the card that it added support.

So, other than it being a PCI Express Mini card, I cannot find any IBM/Lenovo supported versions of that card, and with a non-whitelisted WiFi card installed, the system will not even boot.

So unless someone from Lenovo will chime in and can provide the correct FRU, I would just get a dongle, or live with 2.4GHz.

Good Luck,

Hi GiancarloI,

In addition with what JDGillis, I tried looking for all the parts available for the G710, and under wifi card I was able to find FRU 20200421 for an Intel 3160 1x1AC+BT PCIE HMC WLAN. I have not yet tested this out since this is the first time I have seen this part number for this machine. If you are going to buy the wifi card make sure that you can return it just in case it does not work.

This is a rare chance that Lenovo adds a wifi card to the whitelist, I wonder why they did so?

Cheers,
