Ideapad G580 Broadcom Wifi module problem

2013-01-19, 13:16 PM

My G580's Broadcom wifi module crashing all the time after sleep mode and and when switching to battery mode.

After the crash, the module disappearing from the device list (become hidden) and i cant use it again, only if i reinstall the chipset driver.

My OS is Windows 8 Pro but same happened with Windows 7 Ultimate.

It is a hardware failure?

Please help!

hi Sigray,

If the steps given by NINE doesn't work, try to:

1, Turn off the PC, remove the AC adapter and battery then press & hold the power button for 30secs (this drains the power off the unit).

2. Reconnect both AC adapter and battery and boot into the BIOS by pressing F2, when you're in, press F9 to set BIOS to default and press F10 to save and exit BIOS.

3. If the same problem occurs and If the wireless adapter still disappears from the device manager, what I would do next is to reconnect the RP-TNC connectors on the wifi chip (these are the white and black cables). To do this, see page 47 of the Hardware Maintenance Manual.

If the same problem occurs, you will need to contact lenovo for service as there's a big possibility that the wireless module is defective. Support phone list here.

Hope this helps

Hi Sigray,

Thanks for posting. You want to to go to your Wireless adapter Properties and under the Powermanagent tab to uncheck "Allow The Computer To Turn Off this device to save power"

Hope this helps and do post back your results.

Re: Ideapad G580 Broadcom Wifi module problem

I tried it. The problem is still remain.

Im almost sure its not a hw problem but a bit strange it doesnt happen with all G580.

Sometimes my laptop working fine for weeks, sometimes the wifi module disappear after one day of fresh Windows install.  Maybe its a power management or a driver problem.

I found some posts on the internet about this problem with different manufacturers.

https://www.google.hu/search?q=broadcom+wifi+gone&sugexp=chrome,mod=0&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#hl=hu&gs_rn=1&gs_ri=serp&tok=KFMNp2Bg2v9SLWeT1b2X1w&pq=broadcom%20wifi%20module%20gone&cp=26&gs_id=2j&xhr=t&q=broadcom+wifi+disappeared&es_nrs=true&pf=p&tbo=d&sclient=psy-ab&oq=broadcom+wifi+disappeared+&gs_l=&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&bvm=bv.41248874,d.bGE&fp=fd6156f295f1ea59&biw=1360&bih=650

I checked the windows event logs too. I found 2 recurring problems : a kernel power failure and one problem with nvidia driver's dll.

Re: Ideapad G580 Broadcom Wifi module problem

hi Sigray,

The wifi adapter is probably not getting a signal / enough power from the OS to wake up after the computer goes to a sleep state.

Try to do the following:

1. Set power settings to High Performance (can be found at the Control Panel > Power Options)

2. Run Windows Update to get the latest patches for the OS (don't install optional components).

3. Disable "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" under the Wireless adapter properties from the Device Manager.

Hope this helps.

Solved it on my machine. By default Windows 8 uses a Microsoft driver for the Broadcom chipset. I downloaded this one. It says Cybertan/Liteon. You run the exe and it installs a broadcom driver. Then on the adapter properties it shows Broadcom and not Microsoft. Now i get my 20mbps vs the old 1Mbps.
