Lenovo G40-30 2nd Ram Slot has no Lock

2015-08-31, 7:40 AM

I notice that my laptop have 2 slots for ram. And I planned to  upgrade my ram by adding 4GB to the second slot, but I was shocked when I open the back cover I found the second slot but it doesn't have a lock and I think there is no slot where you can put the pin of the ram. Just a space so that it looks like you have 2 slot. Is this factory defect?

Re: Lenovo G40-30 2nd Ram Slot has no Lock

hi nihongo24,

Welcome to the Forums.

Looking at the Lenovo G40 Platform Specifications, this unit can take up to:

Memory:

8GB max / PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3L, one 204-pin SO-DIMM socket

This may explain why you only see one RAM slot as the unit is "designed" that way.

Hope this answers your question.

Regards

Oh I see. But I'm confused, if my laptop is built to only have one memory slot, then why does my computer detect that I have two slot. LSC and other softwares whenever I scan it detects that I have two slots?

hi there,

Softwares that has a built-in memory scanner (like LSC, CPU-Z, Crucial System Scanner, Speccy, etc.) usually detects the available amount of memory slots & its specs via the memory controller (i.e., If you have an Intel® Pentium® N3540 CPU, it will show that you have 2 memory slots since this CPU supports 2 memory channels).

In addition, sometimes manufacturers tend to limit the hardware components on a machine (in thie case, the memory slot) in order to simplify the design and reduce cost.

Re: Lenovo G40-30 2nd Ram Slot has no Lock

Hi! Thanks for the solution :).

I just want to ask because it says in platform specification that G40-30 is:

Memory:

8GB max / PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3L, one 204-pin SO-DIMM socket

but in my task manager it says that the speed of my current RAM is 1333Mhz.

Will my RAM automatically underclock if I change my memory with 1600MHZ like the one in the specification above?

hi,

If you have the Celeron® N2830 or Celeron® 3205U CPU then yes, the RAM will underclock and will operate only at 1333Mhz as this is limited by the memory controller that's integrated to the CPU.

Otherwise, if you have the Core™ i3-5005U, i3-5010U, or i5-5200U CPU then the RAM should be able to operate at 1600Mhz.

Regards

hi nihongo24,

Can you write, what type of RAM do you have (capacity, manufacturer...)?

Thanks!
