Unfortunately laptops do not have jumpers like a desktop computer.  The best way to do a hard reset of the CMOS would be to remove the motherboard battery to dissipate any residual electrical charge on the motherboard.  That will clear the CMOS.   In viewing pictures of the G40-30's motherboard it appears that the battery is solder directly to the motherboard.  Its removal will take some soldering skills to perform.

Hello and welcome,

Have you tried turning it on via the Novo button instead of the main power button?

Switching to Legacy mode should not keep you from being able to access the BIOS, that should only affect whether the system attempts to boot from the HD using the GUID Partition Table (GPT), or the Legacy Master Boot Record (MBR) method, so switching to Legacy Mode only on a system configured to boot GPT may keep it from booting the OS, but it should not prevent you from entering the BIOS.

What happens if you (with the laptop powered off) press the Novo button (just forward of the AC power jack) to power up the laptop?     Can you get into the BIOS Setup from the Novo Button Menu?

Regards,

Yes I did tried pressing the novo button, but nothing happens. I cant access anything even the BIOS. Everytime I turn it on, only a black screen is shown nothing more, but I know the power was on since the light indicators are lighting up.

I was wondering the same thing, but i cant figure it out why it wont access bios. I tried what you just said with the AC(w/o battery) and Novo button, still nothing happen. Only shows the black screen, I tried as well removing the harddrive and ram, but nothing seems to work.

Re: Lenovo G40 Black Screen in start up after Changing boot mode to legacy

I am trying to reset my BIOS to default. My laptop is now stuck at black screen everytime I turn it on (can't access BIOS). This happened after I switched the Bootmode UEFI to Legacy. I tried removing the battery and AC adapter, pressing the power button 10-15sec returning it and start, tried it without HDD or RAM or both, end results are all the same. So I was wondering how can I reset the BIOS physically? Is there a jumper in g40-30? or is it possible to discharge ng CMOS battery without removing it?

I see, last question, is there a way to discharge it without unsoldering it?

Whatever you do, don't try shorting out the battery terminals.  I recall several past threads where a member tried that and wound up shorting out a component on the motherboard.

Another thought, it is 3 volt DC battery.  I wondering if you couldn't get a flashlight bulb in that voltage range and use that to drain the battery?  Only problem is that I don't know what the effect it would have on the laptop if the battery is drained completely dead.

okay, thanks very much. I'll probably go with the more safer way, which is unsoldering it and soldering again after 10-15mins.
