Lenovo G500 ODD port not working

Hello.

I have a Lenovo G500 and I removed the DVD drive and replaced with a HDD caddy so I can use a SSD and my 1 TB HDD in my laptop. All worked fine for about 1 year, but after that my Lenovo G500 started to get stuck at the LENOVO logo and won't boot, or it just stop responding in windows software. I noticed that my 1 TB hard drive that I have been using with the help of a HDD caddy stopped showing in my computer, or when it was showing it had raw partition witch lead to data loss.

I decided to replace the HDD caddy, because I have removed my 1 TB hard drive and tested it on another computer and it was fine, no bad sectors , no errors.

I installed my hard drive into a brand new HDD caddy but I have the same problems like before, stuck at LENOVO logo, laptop freezes and sometimes my hard drive won't show up at all.

I was forced to remove the HDD caddy and replace it with the original optical drive that came with my Lenovo laptop, but now the optical drive is not showing up in my computer, device manager and bios at all.

So now I can use my optical drive and or a HDD caddy with my Levono laptop Smiley Sad

Is there any way to fix the ODD sata port on the MB ?

PS: I have updated my bios today with the latest version from lenovo support site and restored defaults in BIOS, but no luck. I have unplugged and plugged the optical drive, but it is not working.

Re: Lenovo G500 ODD port not working

Hi Anturaju93 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

I would assume that booting to Windows is thru the SSD as you were able to check on device manager.

As you have clearly pointed out the point of failure most likely is the  connection SATA port in the motherboard as it would be both the optical drive and HDD caddy not recognized. BIOS can verify if the machine itself detects the hardware .

It would help physically checking and cleaning with compressed air can then reseating it back in making sure that it fits well and aligned on the board as it may just be loose. This may need advance tools and skill to disassemble if needed that may need help in a service center specially if the warranty if still up to call in technical support

Update us how it goes.

Regards

Thanks for your reply. Is the SATA connection on the motherboard removable or it is soldered to the MB? I will give it a try with some compressed air and alcohol.

Re: Lenovo G500 ODD port not working

Hi Anturaju93 ,

Greetings.

As the optical drive / caddy goes in to the SATA port , there is an ODD cable and board separate from the board.

9 VIWGR ODD Board W/Cable (G500/G505/G510) 90002794 (page81 and 83)

As this may just be loose or got tagged when the caddy was removed and not the systemboard itself.

Update us how it goes .

Regards
