Lenovo G510 will boot up, but screen doesnt turn on.

2017-08-25, 23:41 PM

Hello all, trying to fix a computer for a friend, but not sure what the problem is yet. I believe it is either the switch that detects when the laptop is closed being broken or where the LCD screen connector reaches the mother board. But I am hoping to eliminate all other options before opening it up.

So this is what I have tried so far:
-Unplug the battery, detach power, hold the power button down for 20 seconds, put the battery back in, power up. The hard drive spins up, the indicator light comes on, but the screen doesnt power up. I plugged it into an external monitor, and the external monitor works, but the on board lcd screen does not.
-I did the same as above, but instead of putting the battery back in, I just plugged it in and had the same results as above.
-I have also held a flashlight to the screen to make sure that the backlight is not the issue, and even with a bright light to the screen I still cannot see anything

So like I said, not sure what the issue is. They have had the computer for several years so I am assuming it is out of warranty. I currently have it plugged into an external monitor and am running Lenovo's hardware diagnostics program on it.

Once again I am assuming it either has something to do the switch that turns the screen on and off when you close the laptop, or with the connector that runs from the lcd to the motherboard. Hoping you guys might be able to help out!

Hi jtw1,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

At this point, you did manage to isolate the issue as a no display.

You can try changing how closing the lid behave within windows like to shut it down with a closed lid to isolate the lid sensor issue. Likewise to reseat the LCD cables as seen in the hardware manual here

Moving the lid on different angles may place less stress angle on the LCD connector to check if it would at least flicker by going in the BIOS (FN + F2 / using the Novo button next to the power to turn on the machine.

Update us how it goes.

Regards

Hi Spidey.

Same issue here with my screen.  Some young kids were rough with my laptop and slammed the lid down a few times and might have even sat on it.  Computer still works fine as I hooked it up to my TV.  I took apart the G510 as per the manual and it didn't seem like anything was wrong with the cables.   Your thoughts?  Do I need to replace the screen?

Hi chrislemw,

Greetings.

Since we have the external display showing fine, then we are sure that it is not an issue with the display chip or driver. This leaves us with the LCD panel / cable and LCD port as probable points of failure.

Here you may have tried reseating the cable and checking on the ports but if you like to very the LCD itself, try checking using a penlight on the LCD panel if any image is showing other than having a service center test it with their shop's laptop.

Regards
