Lenovo G510 won't turn off

Hello.

The problem is that when I try to shut down the system it seems to work. Windows 8.1 exits, the screen turns off but the fan is still working, and probably so is the HDD. It does not matter how long I wait, nothing changes. The only way to turn it off ultimately is to hold POWER button but this will damage my HDD.

I hope you guys have any solution for this issue.

Thank you in advance.

Re: Lenovo G510 won't turn off

Hi there, Nixram         -

Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.

When you shut down the computer, the machine doesn't completely fully turn off but goes into a hybrid shutdown state -- this is a new feature in Windows 8 / 8.1 to help the PC start up faster after shutting down.

Toi isolate, can you try the following:

  1. Turn off fast startup(aka Hybrid Shutdown)
  2. Before shutting down the machine, remove all third party peripherals (eg. USB flashdrive, mouse, printer, etc.) and observe
  3. If the problem remains, boot the machine in Safe Modeand try to shut the machine down. If the machine shuts down normally, perform a clean bootand try to shut down the machine in normal mode.

    - If this works, there are most likely a programs running in the background that's not closing properly.

Update us how it goes.

Re: Lenovo G510 won't turn off

Thank you for the reply.

I will try to disable fast startup, however so far I noticed that if I unplug the power cord from my laptop the system shuts down completely together with the machine. Probably because of some power management options.
