Lenovo G560 - BIOS and CPU Update

Hello everybody.

I have got an old lenovo G560 that I wish to upgrade a bit as the laptop is in perfect condition and it is mostly used for browsing and some light software developement.

My Lenovo G560 Specifications  are as follows:

Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 Professional (x64) Build 17763.195

Motherboard Chipset: Intel HM55 (IbexPeak-M DH)

CPU Brand Name: Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU M 330 @ 2.13GHz

Video Chipset: NVIDIA GeForce 310M

Total Memory Size: 4 GBytes

BIOS Version: 29CN18WW(V1.06)

I found out that I can upgrage my CPU and I got an i5 520M - it fits absolutely perfectly into the motherboard, however, when I start the laptop I get black screen - not even the Lenovo Bios splash screen. Fan and other led's are operating. I have tried removing ram modules - no success.

Here is a list of supported CPU's that I have found on this very same community:

• Intel Core i5-520M (2.40GHz, 3MB L3, DDR3-1066, PGA)

• Intel Core i5-430M (2.26GHz, 3MB L3, DDR3-1066, PGA)

• Intel Core i3-350M (2.26GHz, 3MB L3, DDR3-1066, PGA)

• Intel Core i3-330M (2.13GHz, 3MB L3, DDR3-1066, PGA)

My guess is I have to update my BIOS to fix this since I currently run a very old BIOS Version: 29CN18WW(V1.06)

I have spent hours searching the Internet for updates but without any success. Would you please guide me on when to find the update files to a newer version?

Thank you in advance!

Re: Lenovo G560 - BIOS and CPU Update

All downloads for end of life devices were moved to Lenovo's EOL portal.

Re: Lenovo G560 - BIOS and CPU Update

Thank you for your swift response, Kacperas  - it ineed helped a lot!

I have managed to update the CPU of my Lenovo G560 and it now runs  Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU M 520 @ 2.40GHz

*As mentioned above my Bios version used to be 29CN18WW(V1.06) which prevented me from upgrading.

I had to flash to 29CN26WW(v2.03) first

Only then I could flash to a higher version from Lenovo's EOL portal - as you suggested in your previos post.

I will now upgrade my RAM memory to the maximum supported 8gb's. Hopefully it will work and my old machine will do just fine in 2019 Smiley Happy

Re: Lenovo G560 - BIOS and CPU Update

Your laptop supports up to 8GB RAM. I would advice to upgrade to this capacity. Please look for 2x 4GB DR3-PC8500 NON-ECC (PC3-1066 MHz) modules. Regarding vendor, look for Samsung, HK Hynix or Micron modules. Please be aware, that some of Kingston modules are known to make problems.

Also consider replacing your disk with SSD. It greatly improve system responsiveness. Samsung 860 EVO will be a good choice in this case.

Re: Lenovo G560 - BIOS and CPU Update

Hello every one...

Today I ordered intel i5-540m processor... now my question is I aready updated BIOS version to 2.17 in 2015.. so is there any newer version of BIOS available or this processor will work with my current version which is (29CN40WW 2.17)?

2nd I am doing an experiment as no body in this forum has ever used this i5-540m processor before. few people tried 520m and 480m both worked fine but as i refer to user manual page 72 is says rPGA for i5-540m and my current processor is P6200 and socket is rPGA so I am hopefull that my socket and chipset will support this processor or else I have an option to exchange my processor to 520m from the vendor.

waiting for your suggestions
thanks in advance
