Lenovo G770 CPU upgrade

2018-10-06, 20:49 PM

Hello,

I want to upgrade the CPU in my Lenovo G770. According to this post, in the laptop's maintenance manual there should be a list of whitelisted CPUs. The ony list I could find is "Table 4" at the end of the document, which only lists a dual core i7 as a possible upgrade (since I already have the listed i5). However, I remember that a while ago I actually found a lot larger list of possible upgrades which included quad core i7s as well.

I'd appreciate if someone could point me to such a list indicating what upgrades I could get.

Thank you.

Actually, I think it was this (unofficial) site that contained that larger CPU list: http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-Intel_%28chipsets%29/HM65_Express.html . Sadly, it only lists the CPUs based on the motherboard's chipset and mentions that the chipset is NOT the only thing determining compatibility, so some CPUs on that list may not actually work with my laptop.

Still, I'd like to ask something else: if anyone here upgraded the CPU on this laptop, what CPU did you upgrade with :)?

Hi alexduna,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Those listed in the manual are generally CPU that tested to run (whitelist) for the model. In several occasion, CPU upgrades do not work even though it is theoretically ok because of the BIOS recognition limitation set  by OEM.

You can share the machine number (MTM) from the sticker or get the MTM listed from here. Include your current CPU and chiipset so we can be specific.

Update us soon as it is convenient to you.

Regards

Your machine supports these Cpu's at best.

No I-7 on the radar. EXCEPT in HMM. thus, a option to explore.  Only because Lenovo did not build one, you cant?

Thank you! Strangely, Lenovo Service Bridge recognizes my Laptop to be of type 1037 and the same type is reported if I enter my serial number on the Lenovo website. However, on the back of the laptop it says that it's type 20089 and Windows' Sytem Information also reports "System Model 20089".

So... since I got type 1037 from both the serial and Service Bridge, I'll go for it, in which case the machine type is 103759324942. (EDIT: I got the machine type from the Lenovo website. I could not find it on the back of my laptop..)

My CPU is the original one - the i5 2450M. My chipset is the Intel HM65 (revision 05).

@sclexman: Thank you for your reply. Indeed, that was the only i7 I could find mentioned in the maitenance manual.. I've, however, found this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c911-1r0llE&t=1s) which shows someone managed to successfully install an i7 2720QM in this laptop :).

A model 20089 is a special build for the European market.

I showed info for the US version.  If I can find your machine in PSREF western Europe, I will post what I find.

Re: Lenovo G770 CPU upgrade

Hi alexduna,

Greetings.

The best OEM compatible I7 upgrade for your Intel I5-2450M 2.5G J1 3M 2cPGA CPU is PN 102001069 Intel I7-2620M 2.7G 4M 2c J1 PGA CPU.

This would be the same CPU indicated in the HMM (page 71) for the machine type 1037  (mtm 103759324942) compatible with HM65 chipset. Above suggestion works with the whitelist certified by OEM so we cannot guarantee other probable upgrades as listed here.

Regards
