Memory Upgrade Problem - Lenovo B50-30 Touch Model 20383

2015-03-15, 1:49 AM

My new Lenovo B50-30 Touch Model 20383 will not accept a memory upgrade.  The unit shipped new with 4GB RAM.  I have tried Crucial (using online scanner), PNY and Samsung DDR3 12800S SODIMM.  The symptom is a blank screen when trying to boot.  The only memory it will work with is the memory the notebook delivered with.  For example, in trying to troubleshoot, I put the purchased SODIMM in the either slot by itself and it will not boot.

I called Lenovo Technical Support and they indicated that this model notebook will only accept memory on a white list. They said the notebook, upon boot, checks the PID of the memory, and if it is not on a white list, the system will not POST.

I am having a hard time believing that Lenovo is forcing users to buy Lenovo branded memory.  I know that they did this with internal wireless cards, however, I can understand that more because of FCC rules and radio transmitters.

Can anyone help me on this issue?  Has anyone else heard of memory being whitelisted?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

The Built in RAM is a low powered RAM

HMT451S6BFR8A-PB 4GB D3L-1600S内存-HF

DDR3L- Lower Powered

Have you tried  a low Powered RAM as well and see if that will work,

I have'nt seen RAM whitelisted so im certain that it is not the case.

Regards

Solid Cruver

If memory serves me correctly, mobile Haswell CPUs (gen 4) require DDR3L RAM. It's an Intel specification, not a Lenovo imposition. The machine won't POST with DDR3.

Edit to add:

Here's a big Intel document on the mobile Gen4 CPUs:

http://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/datasheets/4th-gen-core-family-mobile-m-h-processor-lines-vol-1-datasheet.pdf if you care to scan through it.

Or jump right to page 18, section 2.1, bullets 4 & 6.

Regards.

Solution -> Memory Upgrade Problem - Lenovo B50-30 Touch Model 20383

2015-03-17, 4:22 AM

Found the solution with Sarbin and Solid_Cruver's help.  This notebook requires Lenovo 4GB PC3-12800 DDR3L-1600MHz SODIMM Memory - Part number 0B47380.  I also found a Kingston Memory SODIMM that is an exact Lenovo equivelant. The Kingston part number is KTL-TP3CL/4G. I purchased the Kingston KTL-TP3CL/4G, installed it, and the notebook powered right up and is working flawlessly and much faster.

As information, the Crucial Online Scanner application recommends the incorrect memory.  So called "compatible" or generic  4GB PC3-12800 DDR3 low voltage - 1600MHz SODIMM Memory modules did not work in this notebook. I tried PNY, Crucial, Crucial Notebook Model Number Specific, and Samsung. The symptom when the incompatible memory is installed is a blank screen when the power button is pushed.  There is no warning or error message.

I noticed that the module I received from Kingston is made with SK-Hynix memory and parts, and it may be a SK-Hynix SODIMM with a Kingston label.  The part looks similar to what shipped with the notebook.  Even the PCB is the same blue color.

I appreciate everyone's help on the Lenovo Forum.  Sarbin and Solid_Cruver, it was really nice of you to point me in the right direction.

You are right, the Haswell based chips are VERY picky about memory modules, and most manufactures will pick up on this if you tell them when ordering memory.  I use G-Skill and Mushkin memory with little or no issues, and their respective tech support is very good.

Re: Solution -> Memory Upgrade Problem - Lenovo B50-30 Touch Model 20383

I bought the Crucial 4GB DDR3 PC3 -12800 SODIMM 1.35v 204 pin to upgrade my B50-30. As you say when I installed it in slot 2 to upgrade from 4 to 8GB it did not work and I got the blank screen when powering up.

However when I took out the original memory and put the Crucial RAM into slot 1 it worked normally.

So the Crucial RAM seems compatable is just does not seem to work in conjuction with the original Lenono RAM.

Any suggestions
