New G50-80 reinstall to SSD

2015-12-07, 12:55 PM

Hi, I have a brand new G50-80. Hasn't even been turned on yet. I would like to switch the HDD with a new SSD I have. I can handle physically switching the drive etc. But what about the Windows installation and the Lenovo s/w that comes with it? I could install a vanilla Windows, but that wouldn't give me the Lenovo s/w.

I believe there's a restore utility on the HDD. Can I run that to 'restore' directly to the SSD?

Thanks.

hi figflower,

Welcome to the Forums.

Yes there's a restore utility on the G50-80 (the OneKey Recovery), but it can only restore to the stock HDD. However, you can create a recovery drive and use it to restore to a blank HDD.

Article:

https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/ht076024

Note:

If you're restoring from a smaller capacity SSD (e.g., 256GB), you may get a "There was a problem resetting your PC" error. In this case, you will need to edit partition creation info on the recovery drive to accommodate the SSD as discussed in this thread.

Alternatively, you can also use migrating tools like Acronis Migrate Easy or check this article as it uses EaseUS Todo Backup, a free utility to perform the OS migration.

Edit:

Let me know if this works for you.

Great, thanks for the info. I'll try the 'create a recovery drive' option and edit the ReCreatePartitions.txt file as my SSD is smaller than the drive the laptop came with. Thanks!

Re: New G50-80 reinstall to SSD

Hi, I've created a USB recovery drive. I have Windows 10, but the instructions for Windows 8 were almost exacty what I needed. Now I need to edit the <usb drive letter:\sources\ReCreatePartitions.txt as described in your linked article. However, this file doesn't exist on my recovery drive.

It does have some other files that look like they could be relevant:

\sources\$PBR_Diskpart.txt

\sources\$PBR_ResetConfig.xml

\sources\OEM\pbr.txt

\sources\OEM\ResetConfig.xml

I'm going to 'recover' to an SSD that has 250 billion bytes (around 232Gb) Please advise.

Thanks.

Just to say what's in these files:

$PBR_Diskpart.txt is:

rem == ResetPartitions-UEFI.txt ==
convert gpt
rem == 1. System partition =========================
create partition efi size=100
format quick fs=fat32 label="System"
assign letter="S"
rem == 2. Microsoft Reserved (MSR) partition =======
create partition msr size=16
rem == 3. Windows partition ========================
rem == a. Create the Windows partition ==========
create partition primary
rem == b. Create space for the recovery tools partition ===
shrink minimum=450
rem == c. Prepare the Windows partition =========
format quick fs=ntfs label="Windows"
assign letter="W"
rem == 4. Windows RE tools partition ===============
create partition primary
format quick fs=ntfs label="Windows RE tools"
assign letter="T"
set id=<this looks like a Windows license key so I didn't paste it here>
gpt attributes=0x8000000000000001
list volume
exit

$PBR_ResetConfig.xml is:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<!-- ResetConfig.xml for OS Reconstruction-Based Reset on UEFI -->
<Reset>
  <SystemDisk>
    <DiskpartScriptPath>$PBR_Diskpart.txt</DiskpartScriptPath>
    <MinSize>906175</MinSize>
    <WindowsREPartition>4</WindowsREPartition>
    <WindowsREPath>Recovery\WindowsRE</WindowsREPath>
    <OSPartition>3</OSPartition>
    <WIMBoot>0</WIMBoot>
  </SystemDisk>
</Reset>

Thanks.

hi,

If you'll be using a 256GB SSD, The contents of the $PBR_Diskpart.txt is fine but the $PBR_ResetConfig.xml is configured for a 1TB drive.

Try to editthe $PBR_ResetConfig.xml as follows:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<!-- ResetConfig.xml for OS Reconstruction-Based Reset on UEFI -->
<Reset>
  <SystemDisk>
    <DiskpartScriptPath>$PBR_Diskpart.txt</DiskpartScriptPath>
    <MinSize>158200</MinSize>
    <WindowsREPartition>4</WindowsREPartition>
    <WindowsREPath>Recovery\WindowsRE</WindowsREPath>
    <OSPartition>3</OSPartition>
    <WIMBoot>0</WIMBoot>
  </SystemDisk>
</Reset>

When finished, try to boot from the recovery drive and perform a reset and test.

Let me know how it goes.

Regards

Re: New G50-80 reinstall to SSD

It looks like the esi and msr partitions plus the number in the XML should add up to the size of the disk / 1,048,576. In which case 158200 would only give me a Windows parition of 165,884,723,200 (165Gb ish). Since my Samsung Evo 850 is 250,000,000,000 bytes shouldn't I be trying with something like 238302 for the Windows partition (in the XML).

hi,

That value should work too but if you get a "There was a problem resetting your PC" error then you will need to revert back and try a smaller value.

The thing about going for a smaller value is to avoid getting errors while restoring the factory image. If you have extra space left, it will be marked as an unallocated space and you can always expand this back to your C:\ drive or create a new volume (e.g., D:\) via Disk Management (whichever you prefer).

Re: New G50-80 reinstall to SSD

Hi, I ran with your number in the XML. It decided to expand to use the whole disk. Nice. The document giving instructions that you pointed me to: https://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/documents/ht076024 is for Windows 8 though. There must have been some updates since then for Windows 10.

When reloading, step 8 says "Select "Reset your PC" as shown below." .. I had to select 'Recover from a drive' as the 'Reset this PC' option complained that my hard drive didn't have any partitions (of course - because it was the new one).

Then I was asked 'Just remove my files (use this if you're keeping your PC)' vs 'Fully clean the drive (Use this if you'll recycle your PC. This can take several hours.' I chose the first option!

This all worked extremely well. The Windows installer didn't seem to figure out that it was installing to an SSD and to optimise virtual memory and not use hiberfil.sys which I thought it would do, but that's easily fixed.

Thanks for all your help.
