I have a Lenovo G5070 which came with the default Qualcomm Atheros AR956x Wireless Network Adapter, which did not detect the 5GHz wireless band of my router.
I managed to get Realtek RTL8723BE Wireless LAN 802.11n PCI-E NIC of Lenovo G5080 from a friend of mine, who was disposing it. On the G5080, this wireless lan adaptor detects 5GHz.
But, when i placed the same adaptor on G5070, even though it shows as "Radio types supported : 802.11n 802.11g 802.11b" when checked via command 'netsh wlan show drivers', practically, the 5GHz band does not show up on the PC's available wireless networks. It shows only the 2.4GHz networks
Can someone please let me know the reason and remedy for this please.

Hi deeputhomas ,
Welcome to the Community Forums.
Same issue with the Realtek RTL8723BE on similar G50-70 model from this discussion :
"From this wikidevi page, the Realtek RTL8723BE is a b/g/n 1x1:1 (one transmit and receive radio chains).
If the Wireless Mode under WiFi properties is set to Auto, this means that card will use the fastest connection possible first, which is 802.11n. - Sample image
In addition, a b/g/n wireless card will not be able to detect a 5Ghz wireless access point as these type of cards can only detect and connect to a 2.4Ghz band.
Same goes with the hardware manual for part number 20200570 WirelessLan_Non_Intel, Cbt RTL8723BE
1x1BN+BT4.0 PCIE M.2 WLAN (page 80) as compared to 20200579 WirelessLan_Non_Intel, Ltn NFA345
1x1AC+BT4.0 PCIE M.2 WLAN as example.
Maybe you can double check the WLAN card detection on the G50-80 to a 5hz again and check on the WLAn set properties at the same time.

Thanks for the reply and apologies in the delay in posting .. had a medical emergency....
To a certain extent, i understand what you were trying to convey.
However, i am still perplexed by how it was picking up 5G wifi network in G5080. The reason i got this card, among other spares from the G5080 laptop was because the G5080 motherboard had conked off. So, i cant see the settings of the adaptor anymore. However, my friend swears by all there is, that it detects 5G wifi and he was using it extensively for downloads, streaming and so forth.
Any G5080 users having "Realtek RTL8723BE Wireless LAN 802.11n PCI-E NIC" ?
From the router side, i reset the modem [ASUS RT-AC88U] to default settings, put only the ISP username and password.
From the adaptor side, latest driver dated 20/1/2017, version 2023.49.1215.2016 is installed.
Still no luck as yet.

The issue with WiFi cards that support B/G/N rates, do so only on the 2.4ghz bands of the 802.11 specifications.... This means that your friend may have been mistaken in the assumption that he was on a 5ghz band.
If you are in a wireless "n" only environment without many other competing devices, you would obtain faster downloads than wireless "g" or "b" would provide, as long as you were within a short distance to the router, and without obstructions to the signals.
My G580 has the same issues with it's wireless N adapter... It suffers from slow downloads when connected to a "b" compatible network. When I move to an "AC" network it connects faster, but only if the owner of the network has opted to keep "N" compatibility in place.
In short - the WiFi connectivity you obtain is limited by:
1. Physical limitations.
2. Distance to source.
3. Number of competing devices.
4. Compatibility settings on Router or Access Point.
5. What type of radio hardware your adapter uses.
