New start up disc needed

My daughter purchased a used Lenovo B575 laptop for her younger brother for Christmas. After my daughter checked out the computer and decided to purchase it, the original owner wiped the hard drive and installed Windows 10 on it. Unfortunately this computer was manufactured 09/19/2011 and I don’t believe is capable of running Windows 10 because my daughter says that it is much slower now than it was when it had the old operating system (which I believe was Windows 8). So we now have a computer that makes a better paper weight than actual laptop... so I’m wondering if there is anyway to obtain a Start-up disc or a system restore disc or if anyone has any suggestions on how to get this puppy moving again?

Also, there were no restore points created prior to the installation of Windows 10.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. My poor son gets a compute for Christmas and can’t even use it... ):

Thank you in advance!

Re: New start up disc needed

Hi Leti1111 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

You can purchase the OEM recovery media directly from Lenovo.

You can also clean install it back to the original Windows 8 downloading the ISO image from here (free) and install all other drivers and applications from here (support site).

Just get the same Windows 8 version that came with the machine and it would activate automatically (just skip any activation during installation for later if asked).

Hope this helps answer your query.

Regards

Re: New start up disc needed

Thank you so much for your help! After posting my request for assistance, I looked at the laptop and noticed it actually came new with Windows 7 and must have been updated somewhere along the way... would your post apply to Windows 7 as well?

I really do appreciate all your help!

Re: New start up disc needed

Hi Leti1111,

Microsoft do not have the Windows 7 anymore as it was replaced with Windows 8 and Windows 10.

Only way to get an OEM Win7 image would be purchasing it through Lenovo/manufacturer legally.

If you do have any friends that have the same installer version, this can also work then using the COE key on the sticker for activation if prompted.

Regards

Re: New start up disc needed

The sticker on the keypad only reads “Windows 7” and my daughter purchased this computer used for her younger brother. The guy she bought it from let her test it before he wiped the disc clean, when she picked it up she turned it on and saw it was working... didn’t even think about anything being wrong with it... and sally, I could balance my checking account and go grocery shopping in the time it takes this computer to open up a browser window... which is just perfect for a 13 year old, right?!? I really do appreciate your help!

Re: New start up disc needed

Hi Leti1111,

Greetings.

You may also privately message me the serial number so I can check the Windows version that came originally with the machine. You can also try check if your machine is eligible for recovery media download here.

Re: New start up disc needed

Hello again and thanks again for your help! It’s been about 20 years since I’ve done this type of work on a pc. Will I need to download these onto a disc and restart the disc from my cd-rom or can I download them directly to the pc that needs the clean install? I’m hoping it’s the first but have a feeling it’s the latter... lol

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

thanks!

Re: New start up disc needed

Hi Leti1111,

Greetings.

On another computer, you can download the ISO file of Windows and you can convert it to an installer media on a DVD or a USB thumb drive.

The challenge is what Windows version since Windows 7 is no longer free to download and you may need to buy it from Lenovo for a certified copy (although there are websites that offer it but not legally). Microsoft replaced it with Windows 8 and Windows 10 to freely download it to install.

Here is how to install a clean version. You may also check on some you tube videos for added visual reference but the principle is the same.

Update us how and what version you prefer to install without purchasing a new product key.

Regards
