Replacement hard disk for Lenovo G50-45 model 80E30181US

I looked at the specs  http://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/Lenovo%20Laptops/Lenovo%20G50/Lenovo_G50_Platform_Specificat...

and it mentions SSHD with 8GB NAND flash memory.

1. Will any 2.5inch SSD work with the Lenovo 50-45 model 80E30181US laptop?

2. Is any brand like Western Digital better than others like Samsung for SSDs or they are pretty much the same quality?

3. Do I need the mount bundle shown at with the SSD https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-2-5-Inch-Internal-MZ-75E250B-AM/dp/B00OAJ412U

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: Replacement hard disk for Lenovo G50-45 model 80E30181US

Hi p_s_92,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

General specification for G50-45 as per hardware manual page 27, HDD: SATA 3.0, 6Gb/s.

Checking further on machine type 80E3 do not offer OEM recommended SSD as show here.

To answer your question:

1. Will any 2.5inch SSD work with the Lenovo 50-45 model 80E30181US laptop?

Spoiler
There are no officially tested SSD with this model but as most users doing upgrade, we cannot say that all SSD of the same SATA 2.5 would work. It is expected to work and we have our community members that may be able to share their experiences. Other resellers like Crucial offers scanners for upgrade. It is always best to check for return options just in case.

2. Is any brand like Western Digital better than others like Samsung for SSDs or they are pretty much the same quality?

Spoiler
It would be bias to judge on branding but I would rather that you check on reviews and benchmarks like this just in case specific on the model of each brand. As far as I noticed, most G50 upgrades works ok with the fellow community members here for a Samsung Evo SATA 2.5.

3.Do I need the mount bundle shown at with the SSD

Spoiler
Some SSD would fit right in (similar to this video) as others may need the HDD bracket (which I prefer) to have the SSD secured in-place and thus protecting the SSD pins from being moved that usual cause contact damage. G50 can use either 7mm or 9 mm thickness as the sponge on the quick access door secures it.

Hope that this helps answer your query.

Regards

Re: Replacement hard disk for Lenovo G50-45 model 80E30181US

I just went through this on the same make and model laptop. Don't try to use an old SATA 1 drive - the drive will physically fit and be recognized/formattable, but my experience was that I wasn't able to install Windows 10 on it, the installation kept hanging partway through no matter what installation media I used. New drives are cheap - I should have just bought one to start with and saved myself a headache. You should be able to attach the stock mounting rails to a standard-sized 2.5 in, 7 mm form factor laptop drive (SATA3 and up) and mount it in the machine without any other accessories - the SATA connectors are the standard L-shaped sockets and match right up. An SSD type SATA drive should greatly improve performance. I put a Seagate Barracuda STGS250401 in without any trouble.
