Re: Reset BIOS password

There is no backdoor password.  Removing CMOS battery does not help and will make it worse.  The only choices are to remember the password or to replace the motherboard.

Re: Reset BIOS password

Are you seriously telling us that the only way to deal with an unknown bios password on lenovo -- maybe the most intelligent practical laptop in the world -- is to replace the motherboard??? I got a great refurbishe t510 but now i neef to change the boot options and it has someone else's password. If i cant modify bios this computer is junk to me. How on earth do you rationslize this?

This is done by most manufactures to curb problems with equipment theft... and it has made a dent in it.  Once the theives realize that a stolen notebook (bios password set) will be useless to them or anyone else they refrain from doing it.  *** I am not calling you a thief *** and I realize this can be problematic for the end user that purchases used equipement.  If anyone is  not diligent in asking for any / all passwords at the time of purchase, it will mean that the notebook system board will need to be replaced to remove any BIOS passwords that were set.

In your specific case, I would reach out to the place of purchase (or seller) to have them provide the password, or return it for a system that does not have a password set to begin with.

Good luck.

Re: Reset BIOS password

Me, too. Same, exact issue.

So burying this information slows theft, great.

BUT as owner of the laptop, why can I not update, change or supress my password?

I would rather not have to enter a password every time I power up my laptop (I live with one other adult, who wouldn't go near my laptop if his life depended on it).

I would like to password-protect my laptop if and when I travel.

?????? Thanks

Re: Reset BIOS password

BIOS passwords are some of the most problematic in the industry right now. Most companies implemented strict password / security restrictions due to the significant risk of theft / loss of portable devices that could contain valuable data. The industry as a whole is mostly responsible for the creation of BIOS locked password protection.

I strongly agree with implementing a BIOS password if one is to travel or expose the device to high risk of loss. Just know going it that once set, changing or removing it usually requires a system board replacement.  Best practice is to set a passowrd then enable when needed, disable when not needed.  Just make sure to store your password in a safe place, one that you can easily reach.

Re: Reset BIOS password

Also - avoid using the space bar (spaces) for a password or to delete (over write) an existing password.

Computers do not see spaces used in passwords the same way that letters and numbers (some special symbols) so using them can lead to significant problems.
