I accidentally broke a hinge and it's plastic cover that attached to the LCD bezel on my G580. I think I could glue the cover back, and try to repair/replace the hinge (they are dirt cheap). The problem is that there is a lot of warranty time left, and I am afraid this repair might void it. While the warranty terms don't seem to say anything about voiding it (only that Lenovo is not responsible for damage resulting from unauthorized repairs), this guide says otherwise (it's for a different model, though).
The repair would probably involve removing the palmrest and LCD bezel. AFAIK there are no seals, but I am afraid things such as removing the stickers that cover screws on the LCD might leave some trace.
I could also send the laptop to the official service, but from what I have read on the Internet, these repairs tend to be much more expensive than necessary. Also, the guy from Lenovo service said the postage is free, but this is hard to believe for me, since it's not a warranty repair.
Any clarification on these matters will be appreciated.

I'm sorry to hear what happened.
You can read this article
If you opt to have this repaired through Lenovo, You are correct, this will be an out of warranty type of repair since this is a cosmetic one. And you will need to pay for shipping one way only (From you to Lenovo), this is if you don't have the onsite service.
If you will proceed on self repair, the article above can answer your concern.
Hope this helps
