I bought a Lenovo g580 model 2689 laptop back in august, and it has now stopped working. Whenever I try to switch it on, lights come on, it makes booting noises, the fan works, but nothing happens, just a black screen. I know the monitor works because it has turned on once since I've had this problem. Please help, I have a presentation next week and can't access my work!

Hi turquoise17 and welcome to the community,
Try taking out the battery and unplugging the adapter and press and hold the power button for 10 seconds. Do that 3 times and then plug in just the ac adapter, (not the battery) and see if it boots up.

If you shine a flashlight on the screen while it's booting, do you see a faint image of the OS booting up, or is it totally blank?

I'm afraid at this point that it's sounding like a hardware problem.
One last thing to try is to hook up an external monitor and see if it shows up on it, if you have access to one.
It could be a bad monitor, bad ram chips, I doubt if it's a bad hard drive because it should still boot to the bios.

Could I get it looked at by a local computer repair company?? Or if they take off the back and look inside will it invalidate my warranty? Thanks for your help Dave

They should be able to diagnose it without voiding the warranty. They can test the monitor, ram chips and and hard drive without voiding the warranty. If it turns out to be the motherboard, they wouldn't have one anyway, then it would have to be sent in to service.
