Is there any way to improve my wireless speed on my 4 year old G780?
it has the Broadcom 802.11n wireless adaptor - and the drivers are showing as up to date

The only option to improve upon the wifi speed would be to install a different wifi device. As your notebook is four years old you may need to resort to a USB type of wireless device... The internal card would need to be ordered from Lenovo, and be a branded part from the notebook's "whitelist" found in the maintenance manual's parts listing.
That can be downloaded from the support tab of this website.

thanks for prompt reply.
am I correct that a USB device would be external? can you recommend one? sounds simpler than going through Lenovo and having to find someone to install internal card.

Internal Wifi cards for Lenovo laptops are white listed in the BIOS. This list is seldom/never updated. Unless you are willing to get a un-official BIOS then the best option is getting a usb dongle.
