lenovo G580 laptop HDD replacement

2017-07-21, 22:47 PM

I have a lenovo G580 laptop with 1TB seagate HDD. Hard drive specs are provided below. The laptop is not working now. I am able to boot my laptop but it shows blank screen afterwards. even the one click recovery option provided in my laptop doesnt work. When i try the one click recovery, it shows copying files and then I see the blank screen again. I've waited more than a day with just the blank screen.

I tried running the lenovo diagnostic tool and found that SMART quick test got failed. further I tried to search and recover bad sectors, It ran till 95% but process got very slow after that.. its still 95% even after 2 days, and I see more than 65k bad sectors.

It looks like my harddrive has gone bad, when I removed the hdd and booted laptop using my windows 8 bootable flash drive, i got the windows install screen (when i did the same with HDD installed, it dint show the windows install screen.)

Would it be fine if I bought a replacement HDD and install windows on it? I dont know where my windows 8 product key is and somewhere I found that its in BIOS and the new windows install should recognize it automatically.

Also would any HDD work for my laptop or only selective ones? I heard that G580 laptops comes with OEM hard drives,

Welcome to the Community FOrums.

General specification as per hardware manual (page 28):

• 2.5" , 9.5 mm / 7.0 mm Height SATA 320G /500 GB / 750 GB / 1 TB (5400 rpm)

• 2.5" , 9.5 mm / 7.0 mm Height SATA 320G /500 GB (7200 rpm)

OEM recommended Harddrive listed here on the FRU page 102-103, storage, however, is not really as selective as the RAM and WLAN card so as long as the specifications are met, then it may not be as much problem in the replacement.

If a non-OEM part is more convenient for you, then just check for return option just in case or even a SATA Solid State Drive.

OEM product key for Windows 8 is embedded on the motherboard as it would automatically be activated.

You may simply download Windows ISO and install it on the machine with the new hard drive.
