Creating recovery disc on DVD

2009-03-07, 11:39 AM
Was I meant to use a CD for startup disc and a DVD for product recovery? cause it didn't indiciate which media to use when creating the recovery disc. I used a DVD for both. Did I do this wrong? I'm on a 3000 J comp. Will I still be able to boot the DVD recovery disc?

Hi,

I used a DVD also.  I recently used the discs to restore my system.  I checked, and the files on the startup disc would fit on a CD.  The Product recovery DVD had over 3GB of files.

Incidentally, prior to restoring my system I put the hardware and BIOS back to what I recalled as the original configuration.  I experienced problems restoring from the both the hard drive and the recovery discs.  I neglected to change my RAM from 4GB back to the original 1 GB, however.  When I did change it back, I was able to successfully restore my system from the discs.  Because of some small problems I may attempt another restore, this time  from the hard drive.

I'm guessing you were able to boot up the DVD? so it doesn't matter if the startup disc is on a DVD? guess I don't need to worry

Hi,

I suppose I could have expressed myself more clearly,  I did use DVDs for both the Startup and Product Recovery discs.

Do you also have the option to do a clean re-install from the hard drive?  My system came with a reserved area on the hard drive of about 10GB, that contains the Product Recovery data as well as the means to re-install.  It looks as though this space is also used for backups.

Hi,

I'm not sure how similar our systems are to each other so its hard to answer definitively.  On my system if I repeatedly tap Enter as the system starts I'll see the Rescue and Recovery section that is not part of Windows.  In the BIOS (tap "Del" to access this as the system starts) in the Startup section there are choices that provide for various prompts to be displayed to access the Recovery section.

Try to get into the Rescue and Recovery area and if your successful but still have questions I'll try to help.  Good luck.  Let us know how things go.
