Fan Control

Hi.

I recently bought the V15 G2-ALC and so far I'm pretty happy with it.

The only thing that really annoys me is the fan curve. It's way too agressive, turning on even with a CPU temp of less than 60C.

Is there any way to set a custom fan curve? If no official way exists, I'd love if someone could give me the EC registers for fan speed so I can make a config in NBFC.

Re:Fan Control

Welcome to the Community Forums @MonsieurCostume ,

I suggest that you share the complete machine type model / MTM (ex. 81C70000RK or 20UD000BUS) from the sticker usually located under the case. This would help find more details about your machine variant, while keeping the confidentiality of your serial number.

If you can't find any sticker under the device showing the machine type model / MTM, check this link as guide how to find it within Windows. Please do not include the machine serial number (S/N): https://support.lenovo.com/ph/en/videos/vid100751-how-to-locate-serial-number-and-machine-type-model-number-may-2020-update

Please try to check if the current BIOS version of your machine is the same as the recommended BIOS version uploaded on the support site.

On the support site: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/, type the machine serial number (S/N) on the search bar. Hit enter to search the details regarding that unit. Click on the Drivers and Software tab, head to the Manual Update tab. On the list of drivers you will see the BIOS/UEFI driver. Compare it to your current BIOS driver version and let us know if these two versions match.

You may check on Lenovo Vantage to set the fan into Quiet mode. You may download the Lenovo Vantage app from the Microsoft Store.

If there is no option on Lenovo Vantage app, go ahead and proceed to check it on BIOS.

Perform a static discharge/power cycle
- Remove all cables connected to the device (power cable, hdmi, external mouse, external keyboard, etc)
- Be sure device is switched off / powered off
- Press and hold down the power button for 60 seconds
- When done, re-attach all cables
- Attach the  ac adapter and let the unit charge for about couple of minutes

Boot through Novo button
- Locate your machine's Novo button from the either sides. Check this knowledge base showing how it would look like: https://support.lenovo.com/ph/en/solutions/ht062552-introduction-to-novo-button-ideapad
- Click this by using an unfolded paperclip or anything similar that would fit.
- Machine should power up and boot straight to Novo Menu.
- Navigate and select using the arrow keys to BIOS Set Up.
- Head to Configuration tab and look for quiet mode if this is available.

Regards.

Re:Fan Control

Thank you for your suggestions.

MTM: 82KD0034MX

BIOS: GLCN40WW (seems to be the latest version?)

Fan is set to Quiet.

EDIT: I did the static discharge thing and the fan behaves the same.

It seems as if the fan reacts to high GPU utilization spanning some amount of time, regardless of temperature!

2nd EDIT:

I switched to the passive cooling option in Windows' power options and the fan stays off.

Only problem is the fan doesn't kick in even at 90c. I know the CPU can handle this just fine but I'd be more comfortable making my own fan curve.

Re:Fan Control

Hi @MonsieurCostume ,

Yes, it seems that your current BIOS version is similar to the BIOS version uploaded on the support site. If these two versions are the same, then it means the device itself is properly updated. All the processes and behavior in your fan are actually controlled  by the BIOS itself, the fan throttling at some type of activity or when the machine is performing a task is a way of device's maintenance and with an updated BIOS, this is how it was  intended by the developers.

I cannot see any hardware issue on this and if there are issues with the fan, updating the BIOS is usually the fix.

Re:Fan Control

I don't think there's actually anything wrong with the fan, but that Lenovo has made some decisions I don't agree with.

Sadly, the "passive" cooling mode in Windows is not consistent, and the fan seems to spin up whenever it feels like it.

I'll continue my search for a solution and will report back should I be successful.

Thanks for your time and help!

Re:Fan Control

Yes!

My solution was to install Pop!_OS and then installing the "cpupower" gnome extension. https://github.com/deinstapel/cpupower

This basically allows me to set the min/max CPU state and toggle turbo boost on/off. It even comes with a few presets and you're free to make your own.

This could possibly be done on Windows 10 using power profiles or third party applications, but my setup works so seamlessly I rarely see a reason to even boot my Windows 10 partition anymore.

All that said: I'm really disappointed in Lenovo's... seeming lack of ambition and care for their customer. How difficult could it be, to allow us full control of our fan? This is a great machine, but I feel its software really brings it down.

Hey, I'm already using Throttlestop to control the behaviour of the CPU. But even with it, the fan is always running, which affects the battery life really bad.

With all due respect: that's not a proper solution. The only one would be a update from Lenovo with a less aggressive fan-pro.
