I suggest you go through this search for fan noise. Not necessarily for N100.

I too use NHC (notebook hardware control) which gives enough and safe control over CPU speed, temperature  and load, voltages and keeps the fan(CPU load/temperature is linked to fan on/off) in control and quiet. This program obviously needs system specific settings. Its ACPI control also does a bit of job. i'm not really knowledgeable in these things, but i keep changing settings according to my needs - that is - quiet or performance. both can not be together. if you are running some heavy application(s), CPU will run high and so will the fan, which is good for the safety of CPU. Some applications/softwares are also more CPU consuming which turns on fan sometimes.Ubuntu gives the quieter performance over Xp for me, as XP consumes more CPU than ubuntu-at least for my system.

WARNING:Controlling CPU voltage/Fan speed using these softwares(and forum posted ACPI scripts) may damage your CPU. Please be warned and advised before use.

Re: 3000 N100 Lenovo Labtop fan is very noisy!

I've got the same fanproblem.. I bought a refurbished model 3000 N100. When I first got this laptopthe fan sounded a bit "off note" but it took it a few months beforeit grew to a point of serious noise pollution which at that point I had it replacedunder warranty.

The new fan kept thesystem cool and steady but was much much quieter than the first defective fan.I use the word WAS, because I have now had the replacement fan for about thesame amount of time as the original fan and the noise has again gone from"off note" to a VERY unhealthy loud.

Of course I am now outof my year warranty and a very un-wealthy student, so I'm just hoping it holdsout rather than spending what would most likely cost $15-$20 dollars toreplace.

I've owned about 6laptops in the last 8 years and never have had to replace the same fan on anylaptop twice. I hope Lenovo steps up to the plate for this one or I for onehave not be planning to make any further lenovo related purchases.

I’m writing this now inhopes to bump the topic and find if there is any updated news on this topic.

Namasta,

David

Hello All,

Only one drop of mechanical oil will solve your problem!

Download and read service manual, open the fan carefully, disassemble it, clean and lubricate it.
