FIXED! - Intermittent internet connection on IdeaPad V570

2011-09-26, 15:03 PM

LOOK AT THE SYMPTOMS IN THIS MESSAGE, THEN SKIP DOWN TO 12/3/11 FOR THE FIX!  YEA!

I just bought a new IdeaPad V570 and am having problems with intermittent internet connection.  It will be working fine, then just freeze and take a minute or two to load pages.  I try many different sites with the same result.  This will continue for some time, like 30 minutes with pages taking 30 seconds to 2 minutes to load.  Then, it will go back to being fast.  Then, later the whole cycle starts again.

I KNOW this is a problem with the new IdeaPad V570 because I have my 7 year old Dell laptop sitting right next to it and can load the same exact websites very fast while the IdeaPad is struggling with intermittent problems.  I experience these problems with Firefox and IE.  Have two other computers in the house with no problems.

Looked at other posts here and I've already tried:

  1. Tried disabling antivirus and firewall.

  2. Had Kaspersky AV and Windows firewall running.  Uninstalled Kaspersky and installed Avast AV.  Disabled Windows firewall and installed Comodo firewall.

  3. Lots of reboots, restarts of browsers, etc.

  4. Ensured maximum performance is on for battery and plugged.

  5. Unchecked, "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."

Thanks in advance for any help!

Steve

P.S.  This intermittent internet problem occurs while I'm actively using the laptop.  It will be fine, loading pages fast, then all the sudden it freezes.  It is not an issue of the computer sitting there for a while, or going into sleep/hibernate, and then having a problem.  It happens when I'm right in the middle of actively browsing the web.

Hoping to bring this up to the top as I also have the same issue with the V570.  Same situation for me with other equipment, in the same general area, working just fine.  Best guess is problems with the driver but haven't been able to find an update.

Re: Intermittent internet connection on IdeaPad V570

I FOUND A SOLUTION TO THIS BY ANOTHER USER:

http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T61-and-prior-T-series-ThinkPad/New-T61-Dead-slow-wireless/m-p/184003/highlight/false#M42673

THANKS FOR NOTHING LENOVO!!!! :smileymad:

The problem is with the 802.11n Mode.  As soon as this was DISABLED, my wireless speed jumped back to extremely fast 9-10 Mbps!!!  And, my intermittent wireless connection problems disappeared!

Details on this simple fix are:  Open Control Panel, click on: Device Manager->Network Adapters->Intel Centrino Wireless N 6150 (or your card).  Then, right-click and open Properties.  Click Advanced tab.  Then, click "802.11n Mode" and click "Disabled".  Then, click "OK".

Before this fix, I had INCREDIBLY SLOW download speeds.  I've spent 8 hrs on the phone with Lenovo... AFTER PAYING $89 TO EVEN TALK TO THEM!!!!  And, they don't know about this solution.  For now, I'll give up any extra speed n-mode might have given me.  Before this fix, I had a very intermittent wireless connection that would occasional freeze for 20 seconds to 2 minutes!  My download speed tests were running at 200-500 Kbps.  As soon as I disabled 802.11N Mode, I jumped back up to 9-10 Mbps!!!!  And, I no longer have the intermittent wireless freezes!  It's fixed!!!

Lenovo wanted me to either send my laptop back (10 business day wait!!!) and/or re-install Window 7 (thus wiping out all of my weeks of installs on this new computer!!!) and I wasn't convinced that would even fix the problem.  (And, it would NOT have fixed the problem!)  They were just grasping at straws for a solution.  I was about to buy a new Intel Centrino wireless 6150 N card myself and try installing the new hardware instead of having to send the computer back or having my system wiped out by them.  But, I kept searching around and found this solution.  It worked!!!!!

WHY DOESN'T LENOVO KNOW ABOUT THIS?!?!?!?!

I had the same problem and following your instructions saved me a lot of hastles and headaches.  I first called customer support and they told me to do the one button system reset which did nothing to solve the problem.  Then I found your post.  Thanks so much.

This fixed my "new" refurb V570 I was fully ready to send back. Gotta love troubleshooting for 4-5 hours a brand-new (well, again, refurbished) machine.

Anyway, thanks for your post, this issue was really the difference between me sending this machine back and not.  This now seems like a pretty nice machine with this issue fixed...

When I disabled the 802.11n mode my connection was lost! For me the solution was... In Device Manager/Network Adapters/(your wireless)/Advanced there is a setting called "Roaming Aggressiveness". What this does is try to balance performance and connectivity. On my network (and I'm sure most others) there are several wi-fi possibilities, so when performance drops on the primary network it disconnects and tries to find another network. Of course, the other networks aren't connected so the wi-fi goes belly up. I have set this option to "lowest" so the wireless client will not roam (looking for another network). I haven't lost the connection all day(!) and I haven't noticed any difference in performance. Give it a try!
