Re: G550 fan problem

Good news!  I spent some of my time researching online and I've found somewhere where Lenovo can get hold of a G550 within five business days:

http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:category.details?current-catalog-id=12F0696583E04D86B9B79B0FEC01C087&current-category-id=C2790FAB90184EB8A8E910C521C2274B

In case Lenovo doesn't have internet access, here's a telephone number I also found: 1-866-96-THINK

Hope this helps.

Re: G550 fan problem

Good one!

Actually, I've looked at 3 and none of them do what has been reported here (1 on bios 2.06, and 2 on bios 2.10)  The fan just comes on an runs - doesn't cycle.  In fairness, this is at my desk or in the lab, and we do have white noise generators in our environment which might(?) reduce the perceived loudness of the fan.

I do believe what has been posted for 20 pages - there are 53 of you here after all....  irrestpective of my personal observations, this has been escalated to engineering and hopefully we'll get an update soon.

Love the charts and graphs stephano12345.   (nice touch with all the hearing protection stuff)

I understand what you are saying about 1 degree threshold for on / off.

One thing that is curious here - out of the 53 members posting about the problem, 51 of them are European, and only 2 - MVR and LanEVO are in the US.   Statistically that is very different than the normal distribution we see here in the forum and makes me wonder if there are any differences in models sold in Europe vs the US.  It just seems odd...

MVR, LanEVO - please see my PM's on the way..

Thanks,

Mark

Thanks for the update Mark.  The fact that this problem seems to be most apparent among non-US users would point to the 240v we use as opposed to the 110v in the US.  However, the fan's behaviour was the same when using battery power.  Unless different production lines use different components for G550s destined for different markets, I can only assume that Americans are either hard of hearing or just accept the fan behaviour as a feature of 'Valueline' systems.

Hey Mark,

Thanks for the reply, and I will be waiting for your PM. The fan is still continuing with the cycles of noise. When I take it out to the work place or outside to a coffee shop to use, the noise is not so noticeable because of the outside interference. However, at home it becomes noticeable. Also, have you tried plugging it in with just the AC cord powering? The fan seems to go on and off more often when its plugged in, with the battery pulled out. As well, the problem is not a huge problem for me, as I love this computer, but I would really like it fixed. The fan is just on high and low, that is the concern, not so much it being on, but continuous high and low really impacts the longevity for the fan, which is my concern. Overall, a great laptop, which i have no intention of getting rid of, but I would just like this issue solved. Maybe making a BIOS update with the fan switching between its different cycles at different temperatures, and not just high and low fan noise.

Thx,

Ryan

Hey guys, i just downloaded SpeedFan 4.40 to run the temps, and idk if it is accurate or not, but from the readings, the fan jumps onto top speed at around 41-43 degrees C, and then the fans cools it down to 30-31 degress C, going back to dead silent. The fan contimues this cycle over and over again.

That should not be able to affect the actual computer since the transformer will transform the power supplied to your computer to the same voltage (19V) in either case.

And to the poster above; If those temperature ranges are correct you are probably lucky. Mine starts at 46 degrees and turns off at 45. A whooping one degree that takes 10 seconds or less to gain back even at idle.

The geographic difference is interesting indeed. Are the computers assembled in different locations for the different markets? And how are the actual sales figures? As far as I know electronics are generally cheaper in the U.S than most EU countries and thus might be having a larger market share in the EU since it is afterall a budget product.

You should specify what components you have becouse the temps can't be exactly the same with different hardware.

As i said before, fan starts at 46 and stops at 42 (for the G210M). I noticed that if i play a game (more stress on the gpu and cpu) the fan blows harder, so it doesn't have only 1 "gear".

Stop being imature. Mark is trying to help.

Mark, you should make a video or rec to see if it's the same. If not, then try to see the difference in those notebooks. Maybe it has a different fan, more efficient. Or a different heatsink. Is there a specific fan for a specific cpu, or the same for all kind of hardware in G550?
