Re: G550 fan problem SOLVED

Sounds like a heat problem. For me, the temperature rises with the new BIOS only up to about 55, then the fan cools to about 45 degrees.

60 degrees is never reached in my notebook.

The BIOS update (x32 18CN42WW(V2.51).exe) works fine for me (G550 win 7 32 G210M T6600 4GB). The fan works normal (not full speed)  for a couple of minutes then stops for about 5-10 minutes and so on ... the "cycling" is gone. I will check if battery "beep" is  gone as well and later and will post the result here. Thanks Lenovo.

I have the same problem. I have backed up the original bios and do have it as bios.bak file. Do let me know when you find the solution.

I have tried updating BIOS on 64 bit windows 7 OS by mistakenly. Now laptop doesn't work with total blank screen. Appreciate if you could help me in updating the new BIOS. I have also tried with existing DVD ROM but it did not work. My laptop is almost dead. Please reply back

@Rahul

Unfortunately, I called Lenovo Support as there is no recovery possible from BIOS update failure. The only solution is to send your laptop for repair. Mine took about 2 week tour-around time.

Was this BIOS update designed specifically for units with the dedicated GPU or is it also supposed to be an improvement for machines with the intergrated Intel graphics? Can anyone give some input?

I also agree a fix for the Alps touchpad will make this laptop much better. I think everyone agrees even on YouTube videos that the Alps touchpad is a major weakness of this model.

I have a G550 with the integrated Intel GPU and I put the new bios on.  Make sure you don't have a 64 bit OS or it won't work - and worse yet, you will have to send your machine to Lenovo to get repaired.  In other words - some people have ended up with vegetable computers after attempting the bios update on Windows 7 64 bit.

I think the issue helps with both - my fan now runs continuously on low fan speed most of the time vs. cycling on and off at regular intervals.  I really didn't have an issue with the fan noise before the bios update so YMMV.

I think the people with faster video graphics cards in the G550 experienced this more as their cards generated more heat and therefore the fan kicked on to high speed much more often.  It probably made a bigger difference for them, but does also benefit the users with integrated GPU's as well.

Hope this answers your questions.
