Re: G550 fan problem

2010-02-25, 20:29 PM

Hi Mark,Cleo et al,

I have the exact same problem as bouza and I am in same mode, struck with a PC that just has three volume light lit with a blank screen on switching on. I have to remove the battery and AC for complete powerdown.

Do you mind to share with us some machine details so we could drill down together the possible root cause?

  • Machine Type Model =G550-2958
  • Chipset model and driver version=I think Intel, forgot about it. ( I can send the serial # if needed in an email)
  • Bios version prior to this v2.51 update=oops, the winphlash did a backup at c:\BIOS but did not note it.

Some forum members commented they saw only power light on after reboot apart from black screen. What else did you notice? Did the machine respond such as fan's running after hard reset?

Including the above, I see that my CD was accessed (for 4 sec aprox as if it's trying to read the boot record, I have a bootable CD but it did not read) as I have a boot order from CD then HDD. All three volume  lights goes on. On holding the power button, the three lights go off, but not the power light (first from the left), it's still on, I have to remove the battery to completely shutdown. After complete shutdown, if I put the AC, I see battery light going on.

Please help!

Update: downloaded the flash update today from : http://consumersupport.lenovo.com/en/DriversDownloads/drivers_show_2579.html

(Please first pull off of the web as it might be downloaded by other new users)

PS: I am on-call this week and next week and I am really screwed if I can't get the laptop booted :(.

Re: G550 fan problem

2010-02-26, 8:31 AM

I've read the other thread about the fan problems and I don't think I have that spinning problem if I understood the description correctly, so I haven't yet installed the BIOS update.

There is one thing about which I'd like to know of your experience. Having a Dual Core CPU I'm not surprised the fans are spinning most of the time. Only when CPU usage is low for a while (around 4%) there are periods when the fan is stopped and the computer is completely silent.

However, these periods are very short. They last for about half a minute at most then the fan is started again. So the cycle is like this: fan is spinning, then it stops for 10-30 seconds, then it is started again for several minutes, then it stops again for 10-30 secs, and so on.

So I never have a completely silent period longer than about 30 seconds. Is it normal? Should there be longer silent periods? If it's normal then why is the fan stopped at all? These very short silent periods don't seem to worth the effort.

What's your experience with this? Do you have longer completely silent periods than 30 seconds?

Re: G550 fan problem SOLVED

2010-02-26, 19:06 PM

Mark, Long time no bitch from me, not since the Win  7 Free Upgrade nightmare.   But to a current issue.

I flashed (attempted to flash) the BIOS fan fix update for Window 7 64 yesterday.   I'm sorry I have no reference to the file name, my laptop(G550) is now dead so I can't get to it. .   I called tech support but the lady who answered apparently had no idea what a BIOS is or possibly couldn't communicate any understanding in any language that I'm familiar with.  Case# WN1781706

I thought I had followed all the instructions and now it appears that I may well have done nothing wrong because today 2/26, one day after toasting my laptop, that patch is not longer on http://consumersupport.lenovo.com/en/DriversDownloads/drivers_list.aspx?CategoryID=600154.

My G550 is already on its merry way back to Lenovo for repair.   Down cost of shipping and a week or two (if I'm lucky) with no laptop.

What is it with the Drivers and download page.   Last weekend I attempted to download the 272MB update for Onekey.   I would only download 7.XX MB.   Even on different PCs.  and the MD5 checksums proved every download was exactly the same and exactly wrong.   I submitted a feedback and the next day it worked like a champ.  It was pretty obvious that they had screw up the file.

I know better now, don't trust anything from drivers/download.   And it doesn't seem to make much difference how long the stuff stays out there.   The Onekey patch was almost a month old before I tried it.

Re: G550 fan problem

My experience on a G550 Window 7 64bit is that the fan seldom turns fast enough to notice any noise.

But like a fool, I flashed my BIOS yesterday with the newly available file for Win7-64 and it turned my laptop into a veggie.  It is now on its way to Lenovo for repair.   So if you aren't having an issue that really bothers you, I'd be very cautious about any upgrade from Lenovo.    And today, the patch I applied yesterday has been pulled from the Drivers/Downloads page.  Thank you Lenovo.

5928-3cu G550

Windows 7 Home Prem.  64 bit

Flash seemed to go ok when it rebooted the fan was running constantly and it would never come up.

I've noticed the Update has been pulled.   My PC is on its way to Grapevine since yesterday.

Just a favour  Pernicies, did you fix your M3438G fan problem? I have just installed Windows 7 on mine and cannot get the fan to calm down. Any ideas?
