No problem for me

2010-03-02, 1:00 AM

I bought my G550 with integrated Intel graphics in December 2009 and I have no problems with the fan. I already post this but was still reviewing this topic because I'm a owner G550 too.

I did not update the BIOS and will not do this. My fan starts at max for 1-3 mins and then stops for 5-10 mins. My Lenovo comes with a stock BIOS. This is strange because other people have the same version of the BIOS and experience the issue with the fan.

Maybe the problem is not in the BIOS, it could be a temperature censor or something like that. And Lenovo just puts the BIOS which increases intervals between switchings of the fan, or now it depends on a higher temperature.

I bought two G550 in US in Jan. 2010 and don't have fan problem at all. I also have Dell Inspiron 1720 and 1705. I compare G550 as more silent than Dell notebooks. I will not flash bios.

Re: G550 fan problem SOLVED

I use G550 with nVidia and win7 32-bit.

After upgrading BIOS, I can tell that all that this upgrade did is changed the on/off period of the fan.

Now, the fan stops for longer period, CPU core is raising almost to 50C and than it starts spinning to get it back to 40C.

This is very primitive control logic.

My opinion is that engineers in Lenovo made some big mistake, and that it is not possible to control fan speed from BIOS, and that we are writing this for nothing.

I don't think it takes months to release this BIOS upgrade just to change on/off period  and mute some alarm sound.

They are underestimating customers intelligence and that is not good for them.

My first and last lenovo.

pros: none

cons:

- terrible CPU fan

- cracking sound coming from case constantly (listen when fan is off)

- noisy keyboard and touchpad buttons

- terrible vertical viewing angle of LCD

- impossible to calibrate display colors . blue is dominant.

- ....

Its a shame.

Even the x64 worked to me, lenovo seems to have very bad software developers. otherwise it wouldnt be necessary to use consumers as test dummy. second evidence is cleary the removing of the x64 bios after fully publishing it on their homepage.

next time it would be better to test updates on different environments BEFORE users f*** up their notebooks.

Only the phone support is more worse than the software developer.  its like talking to fresh immigrated foreigners.

fan is not turned off of course ..it's just that it seems as if it has 2 speeds ...slower one - which delays heating up to 50C for about minut or two, and faster one which reduces temp to normal in like 15 secs.Than it blows as hell.

My grandmother would have set better fan control logic than this one.

They can't fix it.They are just not capable of doing it. I am typing this just because of personal satisfaction, while can't get my money back :)

Everybody are gonna hear about this real lenovo.. when you loose your market share don't be surprised. ;) and you're gonna loose, trust me :)

Bouza

I'm trying to follow what you did after you got you new mobo back from Lenovo.

Is this the sequence:

1) Running on XP 32bit you flashed the bios to 2.51

using the 32 bit installer dated 2/10

2) Then you are able to run fine on that BIOS with Win 7 64bit installed

In other words, you installed the new BIOS under XP 32 and it works under Win7 64bit.

And the fan seem to be working fine?

Re: G550 fan problem SOLVED

Hi All,

I understand that some customers have issue with the bios update and some users can flashed it without black screen. It is not normal to see this happened and we would like to find out the root cause and fix it.

For those have black screen do you mind to share with us some machine details so we could drill down together the possible root cause? We're trying to reproduce it based on customer' configuration.

    * Machine Type Model (e.g. 4446-38U, please remember to provide the last 3 characters as well)
    * Chipset model and driver version
    * Bios version prior to this v2.51 update

Customers who flashed the bios successfully mentioned the new bios has slightly helped the fan condition but still not up to your satisfaction. Does this apply the same to the 32bit as well? Description of the condition is very much appreciated.

Thanks!

Regards,
Cleo
