Re: G550 fan problem

Yep, I got my refund. I was tempted to take another chance on this model, but the number of people reporting the same problem and the fact that Lenovo hasn't taken any steps to reassure us on this thread has forced me to look elsewhere.

@MvR

I got a refund as well but I contacted Lenovo within 7 working days of receiving the laptop (bought it direct from them).

I'm not sure if it would be harder to get a refund outside this period or not.

I wont be buying a G550 as replacement due to the large number of other posters on this thread having the same problems I had.

I've heard Lenovo mentioned in terms of reliability and excellent customer service which swayed my decision in originally purchasing from them.

The lack of official response/ update from Lenovo and the number of posters with the same issue doesn't reinforce my previously held view of the company.

I've checked the inside of this laptop.

The fan is easy to change if you ever  find a replacement, but the problem is not in it, but the bios controlling it.

I removed the heat pipe as well and noticed "nothing special". Like always, too much heat compound was used so I removed them all and put a little silicon paste.

Noticed also huge caps between "heatsinks" and  GPU and north bridge, which was tried to fill with dried and hardened heat paste - though nothing special in this.

I removed the stuff and filled the caps with small aluminium blocks.

Also the size of that copper cooler part is perhaps undersized in case that I cools down some other chips too, not a CPU alone, which leads to inevitable fan usage. I'm not claiming that active cooling is bad but it could be constant with less noise.

Hi

did you notice less heat /fan noise after what you did? I might do the same and use some arctic silver paste to reattach the heatsink.

Wow, good for you!

At least Lenovo now know what the solution to this design fault is.  I hope technicians have taken notes and are modifying all G550s appropriately.  Or maybe they'll just have a laugh amongst themselves, which is obviously what the rest of the company is doing.

Could anybody tell me what to do with this crazy fan? I think it would help if I'll install there
variable resistor or something. It very disappointing.

What telling company about this problem or they dont get it yet? Million people around the world f**cked up by this problem and company woudnt say any words? Please who knows anything about Lenovos thoughts about this problem with G550 fan, write it there... thanks

No, Sontakasa seems to have come up with his own solution.  No-one from Lenovo has bothered to  respond.

I am interested, too.

Is it possible to solve the problem with an bios update?
