Help: Lenovo N500 will not start, product recovery disc won't run

Hi. I am a bit of a laptop dunce so excuse me. My Lenovo N500 has been shutting itself down and not always restarting and the last time I tried a reinstall through the on board system but after a day and a half it was stuck and not changing so I turned it off. Clearly a mistake.

Now when I try to turn it on I get a black screen

Info An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data

It says to insert Windows installation disc and restart but that just circles back to same screen. I have tried the 2 supplied disks. One called "product recovery CD for lenovo N500 Type 4233" (which is the right one I think) and one called "Rescue and recovery disc for use with Microsoft Windows XP" (pretty sure I have Vista and this disc was supplied for people who wanted to get back to XP.

I have tried pressing F8 and F11 to no avail (makes a nasty loud hissing sound).

Any ideas?

No reply? Have tried F12 too, meant to choose the disc, still get same result.

hi Cj75,

 

Since the Disc's are not working.

You might need to Perfrom One key recovery to Recovery the system to Factory Sate.

 

Press the OKr Button on your system while it is off. This button should turn your system on to a diff environment

Just follow the Onscreent promt Toproceed with recovery.

Thanks so much. I like the picture and shoukd have said I tried that first (and it hung and I powered off).

I now realise the recovery disks that came with the computer are for XP (supplied for those who didn't like Vista so they could go back to XP) but that doesn't explain why they hang (they stop at the screen which is labelled "poduct recovery Click next to begin reovery process" and they are stuck on the nvusip.exe file, "next" is not an option to click only "cancel" but it freezes up there).

I have tried to get new discs via www.lenovorecovery.com but N500 is not listed and I have emailed and not had a reply from the contact on that site (yet, still hope).

Any brain waves?

A stupid think I did wqs return boot order to default in the Bios utility without noting what it was before. I don't know if it would help to change this back but I'm not sure what to.

hi Cj75,

 

Can you try if the computer have the WinRE Active

 

Keep on tapping the F8 key once you power on the system. Then select the Repair your computer option from the boot menu that appears.

If You were able to boot to WinRE

 

>In the System Recovery Options dialog box, Try running system restore first to a known good Date where your system state was fine.

If system restore fails.

 

>Try to do this to manually rebuild the BCD

In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt. 

Type BOOTREC /FIXMBR, and then press ENTER. 

Type BOOTREC /FIXBOOT, and then press ENTER. 

Type BOOTREC /REBUILDBCD, and then press ENTER. 

 

 If this still failed I believe you really have to Reinstall Windows on this

Thanks so much. You explain really well and I hope this information might help another person. I think I've really wrecked the laptop. I just get this message.

NTLDR is missing
Press Ctrl Alt Del to Restart

I have ordered recovery disks as you have suggested (23 euros!). Assuming this fixes it I will come back and mark this as solved but for now I await the disks.

A year goes by, and I stumble upon this forum thread while trying to resurrect a Lenovo N500.

Two observations:

1) Cj45, you are *not* a "laptop dunce". You did everything right, and were able to describe your situation very effectively.

2) By posting your questions here, you most certainly helped me.

The response to your question was also excellent.

I've been a computer professional of one sort or another (programmer, web startup fool, systems designer, network administrator, systems operator, trainer...) for 25 years. We all get stuck sometimes.
