N586 wifi lost after 8.1

2013-11-02, 2:59 AM

Hi, I've been looking all over and still haven't found an answer to my problem.

I have a refurbished N586 that has been working like a dream, until about 2 weeks ago when I updated to windows 8.1 (sadly, I had not checked any of the warnings in advance). Since then, I absolutely cannot get my wi-fi to connect right. I get a "Limited Connection" message that doesn't do anything--not even painfully slow loading.

I have a Broadcom 802.11n driver. I've looked to see if there are driver updates, but I have yet to see one for win 8.1. I was on with windows tech support last weekend for about 4 hours and was told that the driver is likely the problem (though that I should still get my modem reset, just in case) and since there are no updates for my driver on Lenovo's site, I'm up the creek.

Since then, I've been searching for possible fixes and have tried a few (like disallowing the computer from automatically turning off the driver under "Power Management.")

Any suggestions? Any obvious, quick fixes that I just missed?

Thank you.

In the meantime, I've been searching tags and forum posts here for other ideas. However, I haven't seen many people using N586, so I don't know how well any of the other suggestions will work for me.

Looks like when 802.11n is enabled on router it doesn't want to work for windows 8.1 (Broadcom 802.11n wireless card) . I set router to B/G and it started working fine (but on slower speeds).

Thanks for answering. I don't think I've tried this fix before. How do you switch it to that setting?

I think I found it. I went under the advanced settings of the wireless lan tab for my router and changed it from 802.11 b/g/n to just b/g. Is that what you meant?

In any case, I tried it and it still didn't give me a wireless connection. Thanks for the suggestion, though. It is really annoying being without wireless, so I'm willing to try one solution after another until I find one that works.

In driver options change Bandwidth Capability to 20MHz instead of 20/40MHz

The same set of issues happened to me on my N586 after installing Windows 8.1.  Since updating and reinstalling drivers didn't alleviate the situation, i remover the internal wifi adapter and replaced it with a generic 802.11n compatible external USB adapter capable of 300Mbps transmission.  Since it arrives with its own drivers, thus far its operation is flawless.  I didn't invest more than $10.00 in it.  It's a shame to have to go this route but it works.
