Upgrading ram on Lenovo 3000 n100

2010-11-01, 17:34 PM

Hi all,

HAve an issue here hopefully someone can assist. I've got a Lenovo 3000 n100 with Windows 7 installed. Its currently using 2x 512 DDR2 RAM and I'm upgrading it to 2x 1GB Kingston 667 DDR2 ram.

Problem is.. One of the ram was faulty (adding the ram didnt even boot the PC to the POST page, I'm getting that swapped tomorrow). I tested the other ram with one of the existing ones (Inner slot: 512Mb, outer slot 1GB) and that worked. However, swapping the ram around (Innet slot 1gb, outer slot 512) didnt. It got as far as the POST page and then just hanged there. Why does it behave this way?

2ndly, I cant seem to get the working ram to boot properly. When putting the sole 1gb ram in, it resulted in the same POST page hang issue mentioned above. However, if I were to go to BIOS and do "Exit and discard changes", it boots up Windows just fine. How do I go around fixing that? And why does it behave like that?

BIOS doesnt have any RAM options at all =( I've also loaded default settings on the BIOS with no luck.

The first thing you must to do is update your BIOS to latest version. Then try again.Sometimes, updating the BIOS improves RAM compatibility issues.

I have a N100, and just tried All combinations of 512 and 1GB sticks.

Booted into Windows every time.

Your 512 and 1GB sticks may not be able to work together,

or you have a bad memory slot.

How about the "good" 1GB, by itself, in each slot?

The "bad"one?

Single 512 in each slot?

Both 512s in, and run Memtest or similar?

Or, just wait for the replacement 1GB and see.

(Latest BIOS found HERE    THX IPnaSH

BUT...BIOS should be flashed in Vista or XP, depending on which OS the laptop

originally came with!)

Thank for the reply guys, I've updates the BIOS yest with no luck.

>>How about the "good" 1GB, by itself, in each slot?

I've tried that. Both booted to the POST page and then hanged there.

>>The "bad"one?

While you could hear the machine being turned on and the HDD lights flashing briefly, nothing came to the screen..

So I brought the entrie laptop to the shop and got the spoilt ram replaced and it worked with both new 1gb rams in it!! I wonder if it has anything to do with dual channel or something to do with both rams needing to be of the same speed and specs. Cos running 1 GB solely didnt work.

Im curious to know why swapping the 512/1gb combination doesnt work. Any plausible explanations? Good to know and remember too.. =)

You bought the laptop to the shop, they put those RAM modules and the laptop worked?

Be sure to run a memory diagnostic program such as Memtest,
or Memtest+. It will not only check the memory, but how your
computer accesses the memory.
If it passes a couple rounds, you should be set.
