V110-15IKB: Windows 10 won't start in UEFI mode

2018-02-12, 14:55 PM

Can anyone explain why Win10 will only start up in Legacy mode but not in UEFI mode?

I've tried everything but failed to boot the installer in UEFI.

When I used Legacy support the installer was loaded and could install W10. However, Windows won't start afterwards in UEFI.

Hi Schwarzcat,

Greetings.

Check if your partitioning style, Legacy mode works in MBR while UEFI mode with GPT.

You can review this and this document for details.

Hope this helps answer your query.

Regards

Thanks.

Actually I had made it GPT but it didn't work out. Then I suspected the USB pendrive that was MBR but after a friend set it up new with GPT I had the same effect. In the end I deleted W10 and installed macOS and Linux on 2 partitions without problem. Kinda strange that W10 makes it so difficult.

If you install windows 10 from a USB, most computers will need the drive to be in NTFS format.

For surface laptops it's FAT32.

Remember to enable legacy mode to boot from USB.

Some lenovo laptops has a specific USB port for bootups. (Yellow port)

The above is not correct.  UEFI BIOSen are required to support booting EFI install media in FAT32 format.  Some may also support or tolerate NTFS, but it isn't a given.

All the Think and Idea machines I've tested boot FAT32 media.  The MS creation tools creates FAT 32 media, as does the recovery drive creation tool in Win 10/Lenovo machines.

Do not boot in legacy mode unless you want a legacy mode install.
