Volume control indicator disappeared

2008-10-17, 13:01 PM

I have a Lenovo N200, model 0769K2G

I recently did some windows updates, and some lenovo care updates (which are done automatically), and suddenly found out that when i press the volume buttons, (including the Fn+f2/f3 keys), they work, BUT no volume indicator on the lower right part of the screen appears, which is kinda annoying since you have to click to check what the volume level is

I googled and couldn't find anything, tried windows restore but for some strange reason there was an error and it failed, i tried to download the latest lenovo update tool but to no avail...

I'd really appreciate if anyone could help me out

PS: the os is Vista Home Premium with SP1

Could not find any link where Lenovo keeps archived drivers so I uploaded my set to:

http://rapidshare.com/files/156491950/LenovoHotKey.zip.html

Be sure to uninstall present version prior to installing these drivers.

Welcome to the forum, supernaut.

Try the following.

  • Right click on a empty space in the middle of the taskbar
  • Click on Properties
  • On the resulting "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" click on the "Notification" Area tab
  • In the option "Select which system icons to always show", check the inside the Volume box
  • Then click Apply and Ok

Your volume icon should be back.

Thanks for the welcome, Solvan,

thanks for the tip, however I failed to point out that the icon is already there. The only difference is that a pop up used to come up showing the volume value(SIMILAR to the bar that comes up wen the icon is clicked once). The bar would go up and down as the volume was changed. I tried to disable and re-enable the icon however to no avail

thanks for your help

Sorry, I did not read your message properly.  The microsoft support link below gives solutions to different volume control issues in Vista environment.

This is related to the "On Screen Display" in the new package for "Hotkey driver for Windows Vista" (7vvu09ww.exe). It also happened to me, on my N200 769-A7U, and only reverting to the original
(older) version of Hotkey drivers fixed the missing on screen volume control issue.

Re: Volume control indicator disappeared

Hi there,

This issue is one of the great examples of Lenovo moving backwards instead of improving user experience with every update. Unfortunately they appear not even to TEST their updates one-by-one on all models that will be supporting the update. What they always have been doing, is presume and by that also expect that since the earlier version of the update worked fine on earlier models, then the new update extending only support for newer models will by default work also fine on the earlier ones again. Howcome? Well it will be a long story to explain, but to make it short; "Expanding a few extra lines and routines to a code, does not necesarily mean that the rest will work ok since there have been no changes there".

The problem with the HotKey utility for the Lenovo 3000 N200 series is that almost all verions beyond version 2.03.0705 (with On Screen Display V5.03.00) do not function properley anymore. A typical issue is that the Fn + F1/F2 will no longer trigger the windows sound level indicator above the clock. Also for example if you install their latest HotKey utility update version  2.08.2008 (with On Screen Display V5.12.00) you will notice not only the volume indicator issue but also your Fn +F5 won't trigger Access Connections either (v4.52 for sure, but can't confirm more recent versions).

Now comes the real bad news; Unfortunately unlike others, Lenovo does not appear to offer an archive for older versions to updates. Such that anyone can streight away download the version which works the best for them!

For those that are seeking to restore their volume indicator issue when using the keyboard HotKey's, I have placed the 2.03.0705 version of the utility on here.

Hope this will work for all of you, until the day Lenovo finally comes up with a proper solution such as propietary HotKey indicators displayed on the screen just like others such as Logitech, Toshiba and Apple have been offering.

Cheers,

Mario

Thanks a lot Kef and Dutchie! finally solved this annoying problem. You know it really is a shame that Lenovo doesnt test their drivers properly since, otherwise, I've had very few problems with my notebook. On top of that, the utility button system that lenovo uses is, in my opinion, very easy and simple to use and saves a lot of hassle. If lenovo dealt with these trivial matters it would make it's customer care even better than it is...

Thanks a lot for the help
