Keyboard and buttons don't work, touchpad does on V100

I am not able to type in my password nor get F1 or  F12 buttons to work (or Lenovo Care button), and can't get to BIOS. I can use the touchpad but that's all.  I can turn the computer off, restart, and put it in sleep.

I did use the Rescue and Recovery Startup Disk I made and noted that kbdclass was running, kbdhid was stopped.  It seems like a hardware problem, but I have no way of checking the devices that I can figure out.

I hooked up an external keyboard via USB and it didn't even light up.

What now?

You would almost have to try a keyboard swap
to troubleshoot that problem. New or good used one.

What does it mean that a USB external keyboard doesn't work either?

I also facing similar prolem. I can't write anything using keypad even user's password or even can't use touch pad. I can only shut down/restart using mouse on Windows 7.

But strange thing is after some shut down/restart, everything is working just fine.

It s possible if keyboard has failed, external will not work.

(Saw this two days ago on a Toshiba at the shop!)

I removed the keyboard, and then the external worked.
Ordered a new KB.

May or may not work for you.

Is changing a keyboard something I can do myself?

I've heard too that the connector sometimes comes loose.

Re: Keyboard and buttons don't work, touchpad does on V100

I removed the keyboard and attached the external USB keyboard, but it still didn't work. The connector seemed tight.

As before, the buttons don't work either.

Also, as before, a USB wireless mouse works, as does the touchpad. It asked me if I wanted to back up when I started, and it seems to be doing that.

Is there a possibility that this is a software problem?  Is there something I could try with the Rescue/Recovery startup disk?

Re: Keyboard and buttons don't work, touchpad does on V100

With the aid of your advice, the excellent videos on removing and re-inserting the strip cover and keyboard, and the diagrams in the manual, I was able to put in a keyboard bought online for $13 (incl. shipping) and get my laptop working again.  Many thanks!  I am relieved it wasn't the motherboard.
