Re: 11abgn upgrade for 3000 N100 0768 FPG

In regards to 11abgn upgrade question for the 3000 N100 0768 FPG

Suggest contacting your Lenovo in-country or regional tech sales about this for an "official" answer...which will probably be no.

The 3000 N100 hardware manual says 11abgn was never offered.  Pages 73 & 74 of the manual indicate this in the table of various Mini-PCI Adapters that were built-in to all the types of 3000 N100's.

...but this information doesn't help you.

In regards to your question, you could try hacking this without Lenovo support and may be successful.

However, in addition to the stumbling block of an unclear path for upgrading your Notebook to “N” think carefully about the general practicality of 802.11n.  It can be problematic to achieve the dramatic theoretical speeds of “N” in the real-world.

SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER PERTAINING TO 802.11N

To achieve the max throughput a PURE 802.11n, a 5 GHz network is recommended. The 5 GHz band has substantial capacity due to many non-overlapping radio channels and less radio interference as compared to the 2.4 GHz band.

Implementing a pure 802.11n-only network may be impractical for many users because the existing computer population is predominantly 802.11b/g only.

Replacing incompatible WiFi cards of entire laptop stock is necessary for older computers to operate on the network.

Consequently, it may be more practical in the short term to operate a mixed 802.11b/g/n network until 802.11n hardware becomes more prevalent.

In a mixed-mode system, it’s generally best to use a dual-radio access point and place the 802.11b/g traffic on the 2.4 GHz radio and the 802.11n traffic on the 5 GHz radio.

Some 802.11n devices that don’t support 5GHz or dual-band operation will be made to run at 54 megabits per second (Mbps).

Hope this helps.

Thank you for the adv.

I see mini cards available for 11a/b/g/n

I'll try one on my notebook.

Usually Lenovo laptops have a BIOS lock where only IBM/Lenovo branded wireless cards work with your laptop. If looking in ebay, search for IBM/Lenovo compatible wireles cards.

hey ortegaluis, first, gotta say your acct name is cool...the elf from the woodland realm...

Do you know how to unlock the BIOS?

In the January 2007, Lenovo 3000 C200 (MT 8922), Hardware Maintenance Manual, a utility is mentioned several times that I can't find on the Lenovo customer support site, called “CE Utility Diskette” for Lenovo 3000 notebooks.

The utility is referred to as necessary for reading and editing the system board EEPROM in the following procedures:

* Restoring the serial number of the system unit [Pg 41]

* Retaining the UUID [Pg 41]

* Reading or writing the ECA information [Pg 41]

The utility is also listed in the last row of the common parts table [Pg 94] as follows:

* CE Utility Diskette for Lenovo 3000 notebooks

* Note: Download the file from the following Web site: http://www.lenovo.com/

This is the utility that unlocks the BIOS, no?

Re: 11abgn upgrade for 3000 N100 0768 FPG

The 11 abgn card needs three antennas, while the 11 abg card only needs two antennas, so if you want the n capable cards, you need to install another antenna into your laptop case, to get the n capable cards...

Re: 11abgn upgrade for 3000 N100 0768 FPG

I'm not referring to an actual lock in the BIOS preventing an upgrade of the wireless card. It is actually more of a compatibility issue where only IBM/Lenovo branded wireless cards will work with the BIOS. There have been reports of non-IBM/Lenovo branded cards used which reported in a "non compatible hardware" message at BIOS splash screen. All you have to do is buy an IBM/Lenovo branded card and install it in your laptop. Also be sure of which card you have, either the mini PCI or the mini PCI-express card.
