I believe your laptop sound is using realtek audio driver, if it is try the link below and download the updated xp driver.
click go on site1, 2nd row for the zip file to download in a folder then unzip in the same folder. Look for setup.exe to uninstall the previous one, reboot then go back to the same folder and click the same setup.exe again to install the new driver. Reboot and hopefully you will have the sound.
Hope this helps.

Lenovo 3000 n200 (0769). Fresh installation of WinXP SP3. No apps installed apart from all MS Auto-update patches.
I've got a problem with the realtec driver returning 10 after installation. I've installed and reinstalled the driver in various versions according to this thread and other advices. I've deleted, rolled back, installed over and reinstalled, but I just can't make the soundcard work. The reason I reinstalled was similar problems with the soundcard on Vista...
Really annoying and I've done everything according to the book (and more). I'm tempted to fire up my old kernel debugger over rs232 and see if that helps me towards a solution, but it's an out of the box installation on a laptop, so it shouldn't really be needed.

I have this problem on my laptop after removing Vista n had XP installed. I've tried several ways but noting can solve it. After reading ur instructions, I've downloaded the realtech on the page u gave.
