Lenovo V510 replace optical drive with 1TB HDD

Is it possible to replace the optical drive with a 1TB HDD. I'm sure I read this was possible when I purchased the laptop but now I can only find references to replacing the optical drive with an additional battery.

I already have the 1TB HDD so it would be ideal to expand the storage on my V510.

Thanks.

Re: Lenovo V510 replace optical drive with 1TB HDD

Hi alexreltonb  ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

The optical drive (DVD burner, 9.0mm high, fixed, tray-in, swappable with optional external battery) shares the same SATA controller (page 66). Same tray in caddy can be use to add it as 2nd storage similar to this discussion

Hope this help answer your query.

Regards

Re: Lenovo V510 replace optical drive with 1TB HDD

Hi alexreltonb ,

Most caddy reseller would be able to provide compatible models else notice the dimensions of the ODD as it would match standard caddy dimension  for a 9.0mm Slim Tray.

You can read though this article to help find a suitable caddy and likewise review the return options just in case.

Inquire the sales personnel for model check .

Regards

Re: Lenovo V510 replace optical drive with 1TB HDD

Thanks for your help. I'm still a bit confused trying to find a compatible caddy.

Many of the caddies for Lenovo laptops say they take up to a 12.5mm hdd - which is the size of the hdd I'd like to use. But then on the spec sheet you posted earlier it says the optical drive is only 9mm high. How could I fit a 12.5mm hdd in a caddy in the laptop, when the optical drive is only 9mm. Is the optical drive mounted in a caddy too?

Sorry if these are stupid questions.

Re: Lenovo V510 replace optical drive with 1TB HDD

Hi alexreltonb ,

Greetings.

Usually caddy would match the size of the optical drive (slim type tray in) as the harddrive slide inside the caddy itself.

From this reseller (only as example) are selections of caddy per model but I was not able to get one specific to V510 ( V560  V580 only), maybe an inquiry with the sales personnel would be better.

I will try to look further still as other members that have same model maybe able to suggest one.

It is a third party resellers that would have those add ons since Lenovo do not offer such options yet.

Always check return policy before purchase.

Regards

Re: Lenovo V510 replace optical drive with 1TB HDD

Hello,

I also have a Lenovo v510 (IKB). I have a configuration with a M2.SSD onboard. I inserted a 2TB-HDD in the HDD slot. Then I bought a caddy to be able to insert another 2TB-HDD of the same kind.

In the BIOS the caddy/HDD is recognized, but when I start up Windows 10 and try to access the HDD, the system "freezes" or delivers error messages. I already tried another HDD with the caddy and even a SSD, but the problem remains the same.

The caddy is probably working fine: When I insert it to another laptop (other manufacturer), the inserted HDD is recognized in the BIOS AND with Windows 10.

I bought the laptop because it has the optical drive which I wanted to replace by a caddy to get a huge HDD space onboard.

Can somebody advise me what I can try or check next?
