Replying to my own post: the Lenovo care button (the wrench) did not work but F11 during bootup brought up the restore program (version 3 compared to version 4 on my Thinkpad disk) so I am in the process of returning the hard drive to its original condition. I would have liked access to the Windows restore functions, and the option to create a genuine setup disk would have been welcome.
