SSD Caddy

Hi, I have a Lenovo V330 with a SSD 240SSD main hard drive.  I wanted to replace my optical drive with a caddy and SSD.  When I put the caddy in the optical drive slot nothing happens. If I take it out and insert the optrcial drive, remove the optical drive and reinsert the SSD caddy it works perfectly and I can copy paste etc to the drive.  I then turn my laptop off and when I restart it I get a blank screen hang.  I have to switch off remove the SSD caddy and restart.  Insert the otical drice and remove it and then re insert the SSD caddy.

I am sure its omething simple, I have tried changing the boot order, but as it wont start with the caddy in I cant get to the boot screen.  Any ideas.

Re: SSD Caddy

Hi not every caddy is compatible.

I had the same problem. Of course I also ordered a Chinese caddy and it didn't work either.

Here in the Netherlands we have an special shop for it. And i get the adjust caddy for my Lenovo Ideapad Z710.

Go in your country to a good computer shop or specialist.

Forget those Chinese junk.

Re: SSD Caddy

I tried putting a normal 2.5 inch mechanical drive in the caddy and it works.  I have tried the ssd drive externally via usb and it is formatted and work perfectly.

So there is something the lap top doesnt like about the ssd in the caddy slot.

As i said if I put the dvd tray in, then remove it and then put the ssd in the caddy this works too.

It must be some signal that the ssd isnt giving out.  The only thing I can think  is it does not require much power and so could be someting to do with that.

I have searched and I cant find a solution.

I cant change the boot disc order because It wont let me to the boot screen, it must be finding an error with the ssd drive in the caddy and stopping.

Re: SSD Caddy

An modern SSD use less energy than an mechanical hard disk.

That can't be the problem. I will today do a test with an SSD.

Re: SSD Caddy

Hi Lex,

I ordered a new caddy from Amazon, half the price of the one from China, and it works perfectly.

Thanks for your help and advice.  I wont buy stuff from China again.

Re: SSD Caddy

Hi Again, oops I spoke too soon.  If I start my lap top with the SSD caddy in I get a blank screen and it wont boot at all.

If I start lap top without anything in caddy hole it starts fine, then I put the ssd caddy in it work perfectly.

It must now be something to with the boot order, it must be trying to boot from the caddy rather then the internal main ssd.

The problem I have is to get into the boot menu I have to restart the lap top and press F1 or F2 to enter boot management stettings.  I cant do this with the caddy in as it stops the boot process.  So I cant change the boot order or stop the caddy from trying to boot.

This might not be the issue, im just guessing.

Re: SSD Caddy

Go to a good computer shop,

Where you can return the product if it doesn't work. of course you have to pay more money but what is it worth to you.

This has cost more together.
