V510-15IKB (80WQ005CGE) + M.2 SATA SSD

2017-11-13, 12:45 PM

I have model 80WQ005CGE,  which have 1Tb SATA drive and empty M.2 port inside. So, can I install SATA M.2 drive (like Samsung EVO 850) as a boot device and 1Tb HDD as secondary?

Hi Alex218,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

As per product specifications:

Storage :

Some: M.2 SSD / SATA 6.0Gb/s
Some: HDD / SATA 6.0Gb/s, 2.5" wide, 7mm or 9.5mm high

Replacement guide are also provided with the hardware manual here as well as recommended m.2 SATA SSD among the FRU list. Parts lookup for Model type 80WQ also show compatible M.2 SATA SSD here.

You can set up the SSD as boot although most dual storage have found more success keeping the HDD as primary and SSD for frequently accessed files and programs. Best not to remove the HDD image yet not unless that you are sure of the SSD boot functionality. Related discussion here.

Hope this helps answer your query.

I would like to know about my Lenovo V510-15IKB laptop - Type 80WQ, you can add an additional SSD.

There is currently a Toshiba MQ01ABD100 1TB Hard Disk.

On the motherboard of this model (Lenovo V510-15IKB - Type 80WQ) there is a slot, free, for PCIe NVMe type SSD.

I inserted a 500 GB PCIe NVMe SSD in this slot but the system boot is not seen, recognized, recognized.

I read somewhere that the motherboard supports SSDs up to 360 GB and maybe that's why it doesn't see the SSD drive I installed.

Before buying a 256 or 360 GB SSD, you can safely tell me if I can include the SSD and what type it must be: M.2 SATA or PCIe NVMe?!

Finally, if the laptop recognizes the SSD, can I set it as a Startup Disk?

Thanks in advance for your attention :-)
