Today I bought this model and have the same problem. If anyone know the solution, please share it here.
arghhhh!!!! there, in a top right corner of the laptop, is a sensor button. Just press it and touchpad becomes alive
(it dosn't look like a button at all)
ADMIN EDIT - There is now an official tip which explains the N500 trackpoint function and the button to enable / disable it.

I really really thought my new laptop was broken. Just a few minutes ago I emailed to see how I could return it.
I'm examined ever inch of the laptop looking for a switch or button but I would have never thought they were controls in a million years.
I never thought I'd be one of those people who want tech support because they can't find a switch!

The link to the official solution is no longer working; it is now a redirect to Lenovo's site, where you are asked for your product and model number (or to sign in/sign up). Thanks for providing the answer here on the forum too.
