@Matt Thanks for the update. I was also wondering why Lenovo didn't make an announcement of the models of the T, X, W series.

Sounds great, except for this:

  • 16:9 display HD+ resolution

Urgs. But I can't say that I'm surprised.

At least no loss in pixel height again. The image will get seriously smaller, tough.

I really can't see why Lenovo doesn't make a point with sticking to 16:10 displays. (I don't dream anymore of even going back to 4:3.) I mean, those notebooks, Thinkpads, are destined to be working machines, not movie players! I really can't see why companies would buy notebooks with 16:9 displays.

A T420s with a 16:10 IPS display, that would have been an appropriate display solution for the flagship of the T series...

But as you said, a few specifics may still change, so: Hope dies last! :smileywink:

Regards, Moskito

Pricing and availability are two things I can't disclose yet.  But it is most definitely 16:9.  I will tell you that over the last four months the panel has changed at least once.

Hi, thank you for all the info posted, really useful!

I just need to ask, why do you think Lenovo goes to 16:9 for a business laptop? Since that is good for movies .. and I barely watch any movie on my laptop, why why why?
I do see the trend of all laptops going the same way, but I just don't get it. Yes, for a multimedia machine, it makes sense. For a light business laptop I don't think so. All webpages go down, no to the right, all documents scroll down, not to the sides, even regular projectors in conference rooms are still 4:3 mostly so 16:9 is an overstrech there too..

4:3 and 16:10 are hard to source economically, this is why there is a change towards 16:9 panel, even in the business grade laptops.

That's probably exactly why they're going towards 16:9.  That doesn't explain why their 16:9 panels are generally crap when compared to their competition's 16:9s.  And I would LOVE to see more 1920x1080 16:9 laptop screens on 13 and 14 inch notebooks.  I know that's too small for many people, but at least provide the option, there are people that want it!

The screen is the most used I/O device in a notebook, so why would you make it the lowest common denominator in an otherwise well built machine.  I've noticed they seem to be having deals and flushing out their existing panels.  Here's to hoping they've gone with a different manufacturer for their new lineup.

That's not news to me. I hear that everytime I mention that 16:10 format would be preferable.

However, I don't expect that to be a problem for a product like the T4x0s, that costs in Europe up to 3000$ (can be even as high as 3500$, depending on the country and the exact configuration).

I assume people like me, that spend up to 3000$ for a notebook would gladly pay 100$ more to get a 16:10 IPS display instead, if only we had the option!

Personally I would go as high as 200-300$ more per machine only to get a 16:10 (IPS) display...

I don't think that the T420s chassis will be any different from the T410s chassis, but I might be wrong here.

@jschwartzbeck

Now imagine not only having 1920x1080, but 1920x1200 or 1600x1000 instead of 1600x900... :smileywink:

I really don't care how man low cost thinkpads Lenovo like the L, E, ... introduces, with I don't know how many glossy parts, 16:9 displays and whatsoever.

As long as they keep the X, W and especially T series the way they're supposed to be: robust, functional business (means non-glossy and 16:10) machines with the distinctive Thinkpad look with an excellent service.

And with that goes, Function over Price or Design!

@Moskito, many electronic consumer products are expensive in many parts of Europe, because of:

-product certification
-VAT
-TARIFF, etc.
-high salary and employment benefits.
-higher cost of providing after sale support

So when you talk about the price of thinkpads have you considered the relative price of equivalent laptops of similar spec from say Dell Latitudes, HP Elitebook, etc. Also, how many T4x0s laptops can Lenovo sell in Europe at 3000 dollars, compared to 1500 dollars in N. America, etc.

I think it was said that if there were more than 15,000 units whom are willing to commit financially to purchase a Thinkpad with IPS (or similar quality) laptops, then it may be possible for Lenovo to start offering such LCD.

@ All,

please refrain from going off topic and turning this thread into yet another display format discussion. There are numerous similar discussions within these boards on the subject so it would be nice if we could avoid another. Maybe this thread would be a good place to continue the discussion.

Thanks
