Thanks for all the information everyone has posted. Im eagerly awaiting the new thinkpads as Im due to replace my aging t500 June this year.

If the t420 or t420s has a decent quality display this will help sway me from purchasing a Vaio Z. I love the Lenovos, in particular the build quality of the thinkpads and amazing keyboards. If the screens are good, or at least have the option of high quality screen I will definitely grab one.

Hi guys, I'm the one who let the cat out of the bag a little early at CES.  As Matt Kohut said, this was an unofficial pre-announce, the T420s I had on hand at the show was indeed a development unit.  It was on display to promote the Enhance Experience 2.0 along with the other systems that booted in under 10 seconds.  Actually, the T420s booted in 7.62s to be exact (according to MS Velocity tool).

Anyway, it's cool everyone is exceited for it.  I will reiterate however, the config on exhibit at CES was/is a prototype.  There are multiple models with configurable options in plan.  That said, I am happy to say, due to the overhwelming response to the fast boot demo, we are accelerating plans to ship a fast booting model.  Details are still being worked out.

John, thanks for the update. I could imagine that the fast boot helps sell computers, and that's good for me -- gives you the resources to develop the computer I need!

Personally speaking, if there is a realiable and quick wake-up from suspend (as we are used to with Thinkpads!), that is far more useful than a quick boot. The newer windows operating systems are stable enough to not _require_ frequent reboots, and having the machine wake up with all the applications where they were in a few seconds is far more important to me than having 10 seconds to the OS screen, and probably a few more times that to open up the usual applications and files.

(I also doubt that it will be 10 seconds to a workable machine once all the startup nonsense is completed in a system with a lot of installed applications.)

thanks for listening --

dhs

@dhs, good points, i agree with you on both of them.

1) I use sleep/resume much more than regular boot. However, MS telemetry reports that a majority of computer users still use boot/shutdown (like 60%). on a daily basis. Typical reasons to reboot during normal operation are Windows Update, certain app installs/uninstalls, and of course a crash or corruption that can only be fixed by a fresh boot. Knowing that your system boots quickly reduces the mental latency and/or time penalty involved in longer boots.

We do look at S3 times as part of the Enhanced Experience and do take corrective measures when performance is outside our thresholds. However, S3 times are already pretty good, so sometimes fixes get de-prioritized (why spend lot of time to recoup 0.3s on a 2s suspend?).

2) I hear you. We at Lenovo can only do so much after the system is released into the wild. For these fast boot systems though, we are at least providing the most optimal starting point possible.

The real question is: when do you think we will see the new models in the market?

I don't actually know the on-sale date, but since we haven't announced I couldnt say even if I did. Is "Spring" close enough for you?

Im purely speculating here, but Lenovo is heavily discounting the Thinkpads and offering better deals than usual. This would indicate the new T series laptops are not too far off. I may be wrong and this is a normal discounting cycle.
