Re: T420S? can't wait for it? when?!

@Andy, can't say for sure, but normally when we ship, it's US-English first and then we start producing languages in waves in succession, usually separated by a week per lang group. For you, FIGS I believe is early in the wave rollout. That's the long winded way to say a week or so after the US release.

Are you going to update those older T-series systems in your sig?

wanna swap? (But you're not getting the T23) :smileyvery-happy:

Serously I'm certainly looking into the possibilities, but at the present time it's a low priority. I've sold alot of T4**s systems and can say that every single customer is super happy - I can only guess those that purchase the T420s will be equally happy.

Job well done! :smileyvery-happy:

chx, thanks. if you mean the ultra-bay battery, i think the answer is yes. if you mean whether or not the existing T400s/T410s battery will work in T420s, that i am not as certain.

A fine detail maybe for a different thread, but it would be very nice for the software to be configurable such that it empties the main battery first. The small battery is significantly more expensive to replace per joule stored!

thanks

The T410s was certainly better than the T400s, but it is uncertain wither the T420s will actually be better than the T410s.  Yes it has 15% performance and WEI goes from 6.9 to 7.1. And graphics double so WEI goes from 4.5 to 6, and 5.2 to 6.3 (gaming).  The supposed one USB 3.0 port would be nice for small fast external storage. Lighter weight and thinner is always better as long as build quality does not take a hit.  2.5 inch SSDs are a little faster, but is the weight and size worth it, I do not think so. And yes pretty much nobody cares about the 720p camera.

So what’s really wrong, yes like Moskito and Beickus point out it is the 16:9 display that everyone complains about in all the forums.  Matt, PerfGuy I do not know which Scarred Cow told you guys to do it, but it is the wrong idea, it is bad for business efficiency as you need to read documents and everything top to bottom quickly and look back up.    Even with more pixels, the 16:9 displays still has useless side sections on either side of the screen and everything is smaller.  It looks like the new model cut just from top and bottom to make a 10.52% smaller 16:9 display. Given this I do not see why a 16:10 option should not be available.  Put a 1680 x 1050 (16:10) display as even a $200+ option and I bet you would not sell too many of the T420s with the smaller 16:9 display.  It should be brought up, as it is a very important issue (I would not buy a 16:9).

I have other concerns about loss of battery life associated with the faster clock speeds, larger SSD, and possible smaller main battery.  Build quality is also a biggie, please do not fix something that is not broke.  The T410s is pretty good, the display could be higher quality and the trackpad scrolling is second rate, but most everything else including depot service is top dog.

Some good points cptcolo.

I don't have much visibility to the panel size decision, but my understanding of the design change is in line with Matt's - it's what all the panel makers are scaling up production on and therefore most cost effective. Can anyone articulate what other benefits this size may convey?

I myself have not made up my mind on the new size. Ever since the start of Win7 however, I have moved my taskbar from the bottom of the screen over to the left side. It took some getting used to (primarily when I went to look at the time), but I much prefer it that way now. I use more of the "useless side sections" you mention and get back a few vertical pixels.

At the end of the day 1600x900 isn't terrible, I could live with that just fine I think. But my first love is still the X-series, so take comfort in the fact that there are those who envy giant resolution like that!

I mean the T410 Slice battery through docking connector (http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:item.detail?GroupID=38&Code=57Y4545&current-category-id=4364BD0F20B94413B5AD6E684D2848E9&&hide_menu_area=yes ). It was already surprising that despite the docking connector is seemingly the same (http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-72873 at least suggest at that, as the docking station is ThinkPad T400s, T410, T410s compatible) the T410s was incompatible with said battery as per http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T410S-Larger-battery-for-the-T410s/m-p/204437

Unfortunately computer industry is forced to follow the "wide(r) screens" path set by television/entertainment industry. Hopefully once they (TV industry) manage to set the 21:9 ratio as the new 'super-duper-cinema' standard, I hope they'll stop and realize what they did.

It's time for a T520s

2011-01-29, 17:46 PM

The Panasonic B10 shows there can be a lightweight 15.6" laptop (4.14lbs -- exact same as a Sony SR 13.3" laptop for example and barely more than the T410s). I wonder whether Lenovo will follow suit :)
